Square Butte (Arizona)
Square Butte is a sandstone summit located on Navajo Nation land, in Coconino County of northern Arizona. It is situated 35 miles (56 km) southeast of the town of Page, and east of Kaibito, where it towers over above the surrounding terrain as a landmark alongside Arizona State Route 98. Square Butte is known as ''Tsé Dikʼání'' in Navajo language, meaning "square rock." Its nearest higher neighbor is White Mesa, to the south. Precipitation runoff from Square Butte drains to northwest into Square Butte Wash or northeast into Potato Canyon, then ultimately Lake Powell, all part of the Colorado River drainage basin. According to the Köppen climate classification system, Square Butte is located in an arid climate zone with hot, very dry summers, and chilly winters. Carmel Formation
The Carmel Formation is a geologic formation in the San Rafael Group that is spread across the U.S. states of Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, north east Arizona and New Mexico. Part of the Colorado Plateau, this formation was laid down in the Middle Jurassic during the late Bajocian, through the Bathonian and into the early Callovian stages. Description The Carmel Formation consists of up to of mudrock and sandstone interbedded with limestone and gypsum. It was laid down in a shallow marine to sabkha environment, into which terrigenous sediment was periodically carried. This gives the formation considerable lithological complexity. The formation is underlain by the Navajo Sandstone, with the regional J-2 unconformity separating the two formations, or by the Temple Cap Formation. The desert climate or arid climate (in the Köppen climate classification ''BWh'' and ''BWk''), is a dry climate sub-type in which there is a severe excess of evaporation over precipitation. The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. It was first published by German-Russian climatologist Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) in 1884, with several later modifications by Köppen, notably in 1918 and 1936. Later, the climatologist Rudolf Geiger (1894–1981) introduced some changes to the classification system, which is thus sometimes called the Köppen–Geiger climate classification system. Surface runoff (also known as overland flow) is the flow of water occurring on the ground surface when excess rainwater, stormwater, meltwater, or other sources, can no longer sufficiently rapidly infiltrate in the soil. Arizona State Route 98
State Route 98 (SR 98) is a state highway in Coconino County in the U.S. state of Arizona. Route description SR 98 begins at an intersection with US 89 just south of the Glen Canyon Dam along the Colorado River. It runs along the southern portion of the city of Page and turns southeast to the Navajo Nation. It enters the town of Kaibito in the reservation, but otherwise the stretch through the Native American reservation is mostly devoid of settlements. Following Indian Route 22, SR 98 intersects Indian Route 221 just north of its eastern terminus at US 160, the Navajo Trail.
