Spring Workshop
Spring Workshop (Chinese: Spring 工作室) was a nonprofit arts organization based in Hong Kong from 2011 to 2018. It was founded as a cross-disciplinary residency program and exhibition space. In 2016, Spring received the Prudential Eye Award for Best Asian Contemporary Art Organization. History Spring Workshop was privately funded as a five-year experimental initiative with artistic craftsmanship and experience. The organization worked with more than 350 local and international residents and collaborators, including Ming Wong, Wu Tsang, Heman Chong, Wong Wai Yin, Qiu Zhijie, Christodoulos Panayiotou, Ho Tzu Nyen, Melati Suryodarmo, Jalal Toufic and Michael Friedman. Chinese Language
Chinese (, especially when referring to written Chinese) is a group of languages spoken natively by the ethnic Han Chinese majority and many minority ethnic groups in Greater China. About 1.3 billion people (or approximately 16% of the world's population) speak a variety of Chinese as their first language. Chinese languages form the Sinitic branch of the Sino-Tibetan languages family. The spoken varieties of Chinese are usually considered by native speakers to be variants of a single language. However, their lack of mutual intelligibility means they are sometimes considered separate languages in a family. Magdalen Wong
Magdalen Wong (; born 1981) is a Hong Kong / New York based artist. She typically works across the mediums of video, photography, sculpture, installation and drawing. Life and work Magdalen Wong was born in Hong Kong but moved to the USA at age 13 and then moved back to Hong Kong in 2006. She completed her undergraduate degree at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2003 and a master's degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005. Wong has described her practice as dealing with "mundane objects and sensual imageries" (timeoutHK). Samson Young
Samson Young (born 1979) is a Hong Kong artist, working primarily in the mediums of sound performance and installations. Early life and education Samson Young was born in Hong-Kong. He received both his BA degree in Music, Philosophy and Gender Studies and his M.Phil in Music Composition from The University of Hong Kong, and his PhD in music composition from Princeton University. He was an assistant professor in sonic art and physical computing at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong. Yuk King Tan
Yuk King Tan (, born 1971) is an Australian-born Chinese-New Zealand artist. Her work is held in the permanent collections of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Tan was born in Australia in 1971 and grew up in New Zealand. She graduated from Auckland's Elam School of Fine Arts in 1993. Tan works with video as well as creating installations from commonly found objects. Nadim Abbas
Nadim Abbas (born 1980 in Hong Kong) is a Hong Kong installation artist. Biography Abbas received his BFA from London's Chelsea College of Art & Design and MPhil from the University of Hong Kong Department of Comparative Literature. He teaches at the City University Hong Kong School of Creative Media and the Hong Kong Art School/ RMIT University. Work Abbas's practice includes heavily-researched installation and sculptural works that play on the psychological patterns of everyday objects and kitsch. Defne Ayas
Defne Ayas (born 1976) is a curator, educator, and publisher in the field of contemporary art and its institutions. Ayas directed and advised many institutions and collaborative platforms across the world, including in China, South Korea, United States, Netherlands, Russia, Lithuania and Italy. She is known for conceiving exhibition and biennale formats within diverse geographies, in each instance composing interdisciplinary frameworks that provide historical anchoring and engagement with local conditions. Joseph Grima (architect)
Joseph Grima is a British architect, critic, curator and editor. He is the creative director of Design Academy Eindhoven and co-founder of the design research studio, Space Caviar. Career Grima graduated from Architectural Association in 2003 and then became the curator of the Biennale Interieur in Kortrijk Istanbul Design Biennial and the director of Chicago Architecture Biennial. Claire Hsu
Claire Hsu is the co-founder and the former executive director of Asia Art Archive (AAA), an independent non-profit organisation founded in 2000 to document and make accessible the multiple recent histories of art in Asia. In September 2021, Hsu stepped down as executive director of AAA after twenty-one years. She acts as the co-chair of AAA's board of directors. Yang Fudong
Yang Fudong ( born 1971 in Beijing) is a Chinese contemporary artist. In the early 1990s, he began to work with film. He began creating films and videos using 35 mm film. Currently Yang directs films, creates photographs, and creates video installations. Yang is known to explore themes that are historical, social, and political by juxtaposing contradictions between current social issues, with cultural norms. A fan of the abstract and fragmented storyline, he tends to create sequences that are long and suspended, with the use of black-and-white as a constant. Witte De With Center For Contemporary Art
Kunstinstituut Melly is a contemporary art gallery located in a former school building on Witte de Withstraat, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. It was founded in 1990 and originally named after the street it was located on. It presents curated exhibitions, symposiums, live events, educational programs, and has a separate art literature publishing arm. In 2017, the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, as it was known, announced it would change its name in order to distance itself from its de facto namesake, the Dutch naval admiral Witte de With, and recognise the negative impacts of colonialism. Former Central Police Station Compound
Tai Kwun, or the Former Central Police Station Compound (CPS Compound) includes three declared monuments in Central, Hong Kong: the former Central Police Station, the Former Central Magistracy, and the Victoria Prison.
