The Spotswood Football Netball Club is an Australian rules football club which has competed in the Western Region Football League (WRFL) since 1935. They are based in the Melbourne suburb of Spotswood. History The Spotswood Football Club became a member of the FDFL from 1935. They were formed in 1927 and played in the Sub Districts League from 1927 to 1934 They won the 1933 premiership. In 1935 they transferred to the Footscray District Football League. Western Region Football League
The Western Region Football League is an Australian rules football semi-professional league, based in the western suburbs of Melbourne, for both seniors and juniors. History The league was formed in 1931 as the "Footscray District Football League". During the 1950s, the VFL club Footscray was financially backing the competition, so they decided to bar clubs that were inside the zone. This resulted in six clubs leaving. More changes occurred in 1952 as the league decided that clubs had to provide an under-18 competition; this action reduced the club numbers down to twelve. The next initiative was the introduction of an under-16 competition in 1954. In 1988, the league absorbed clubs from the West Suburban Football League; and, in 2000, to reflect the fact that the league had expanded across the western suburbs, it changed its name to the Western Region Football League. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Spotswood is an inner-city suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, south-west of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Hobsons Bay local government area. Greg Taube (born 18 April 1938) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). Charlie Sutton
Charlie Sutton (3 April 1924 – 5 June 2012) was an Australian rules footballer who represented in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Although he served the club for many years as coach and committee man, he is perhaps best known for captaining the Bulldogs to their first VFL premiership in 1954. Recruited from Spotswood, Sutton was a tough, nuggety footballer who embodied the club's fighting spirit. He played as a rover and half forward, but it was as a back pocket player that he made his name. In 1950, he finished equal third in the Brownlow Medal count and won the Con Weickhardt Trophy (as it was then known) as the Bulldogs' best and fairest player that season. He was captain-coach of the team from 1951 to 1955. After his retirement as a player, Sutton coached Footscray from 1956 until 9 July 1957, when he was unceremoniously dismissed and replaced by Ted Whitten. Fred Goldsmith (Australian Footballer)
Fred Goldsmith (20 August 1932 – 13 April 2017) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Goldsmith as a seventeen year old in 1950, once kicked 29 goals in a match for Spotswood against Kingsville in the Footscray District Football League. His club was zoned to South Melbourne. VFL Career A fireman, Goldsmith started his career in 1951 as a half forward flanker, having been recruited by South Melbourne from Spotswood. In 1952, he was shifted to fullback; and, in 1955, he became the first ever (and so far, only) specialist fullback to win the Brownlow Medal. To the astonishment of all, in 1956, South Melbourne decided to play its 1955 Brownlow Medallist fullback at full-forward. He played at full-forward for the remainder of his career. Callum Urch
Callum Urch (born 21 July 1984) is an Australian rules footballer who played for the North Melbourne Football Club, Kangaroos in the Australian Football League. After attending Caroline Chisholm Catholic College in Braybrook, Urch made his debut against the Sydney Swans in Round 19 at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 2004. He was part of the 40 point 3-quarter time deficit revival that saw the Kangaroos come back in Glenn Archer's 250th game to win against the odds. After playing just the 8 games over three years, and no games in 2007, he was delisted from the Kangaroos list at the end of the 2007 AFL season. He was then recruited by Victorian Football League club Williamstown Seagulls, Williamstown, before moving to Darley in the Ballarat Football League in 2009. Callan Ward
Callan Ward (born 10 April 1990) is a professional Australian rules footballer playing for the Greater Western Sydney Giants in the Australian Football League (AFL). He previously played for the Western Bulldogs from 2008 to 2011. Ward received a nomination for the 2009 AFL Rising Star award in round 18 of the 2009 season.
