Sports Hall Of Fame Suriname
The Sports Hall of Fame Suriname was until circa 2022 a museum on sports in Paramaribo, Suriname. It was located in the building of the Suriname Olympic Committee, aside the André Kamperveen Stadion. The museum was opened on 6 November 2016 by government minister Faizal Abdoelgafoer of Sports and Youth. After the ceremony the Surinamese national anthem was sung. André Kamperveen Stadion
André Kamperveen Stadium, formerly the National Stadion, is a multi-purpose stadium in Paramaribo, Suriname. Since its opening in 1953, the stadium has been the official home stadium of both football teams S.V. Transvaal and S.V. Robinhood and the official national stadium of the Suriname national football team. With an official capacity of 7,100, it is the largest stadium in Suriname. The stadium is also home to the Suriname Athletics Federation (SAB) as well as the Suriname Cycling Union (SWU). In 1997 Walking Boyz Company joined Transvaal and Robinhood as the third football team to make the stadium their home. In 2014 both Robinhood and Walking Boyz Company relocated to the Dr. Ir. "" () or "" ("Rise, countrymen" in Sranan Tongo) is the national anthem of Suriname. It has two verses: the first in Dutch and the second in Sranan Tongo. History The original version of the anthem was written by Cornelis Atses Hoekstra in 1893 and based on a 1876 melody by Johannes Corstianus de Puy. It was written to replace the old anthem "Wien Neêrlands Bloed". The anthem did not have an official status. In 1959, the Government of Suriname appointed Surinamese writer Henri Frans de Ziel to add a stanza about the unity of the country to Hoekstra's anthem. De Ziel was concerned about the negative nuance in the original and started to transform the anthem into a positive message. He combined this with a poem he wrote in Sranan Tongo on the death of Ronald Elwin Kappel. His anthem was unanimously approved by the Government of Suriname on 7 December 1959. Guno Hoen
Guno Hoen (26 November 1922 – 21 January 2010) was a Surinamese football player, sports journalist, and sports historian. Hoen has played for S.V. Voorwaarts, Politie Voetbal Vereniging, and the Suriname national team. As a footballer, he specialised in penalties and only missed once. After his football career, Hoen was active as sports commentator, and covered the FIFA World Cup four times. In his later life, he was a sports historian who published a three volume work about Surinamese sport people. His photo collection is on display in the Sports Hall of Fame Suriname. Letitia Vriesde
Letitia Alma Vriesde (born 5 October 1964) is a female former track and field athlete from Suriname, who specialised in the 800 metres but was also successful over 1500 metres. She is the first (and to date, only) sportsperson from Suriname to compete at five Olympic Games. She won a silver medal at the 1995 World Championships and a bronze medal at the 2001 World Championships. Vriesde holds the South American records for the 800 metres, 1000 metres and 1500 metres (indoors and outdoors) and also for the 3000 metres (indoors). Anthony Nesty
Anthony Conrad Nesty (born November 25, 1967) is a former competition swimmer from Suriname who was an Olympic gold medallist in the 100-metre butterfly event in 1988. He is currently the head coach of the Florida Gators men's and women's swim team at the University of Florida, where he attended school. Early years Anthony Nesty was born in Port of Spain in 1967, the youngest of five children in his family.
