The Falkland Islands (; es, Islas Malvinas, link=no ) is an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf. The principal islands are about east of South America's southern Patagonian coast and about from Cape Dubouzet at the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, at a latitude of about 52°S. Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. Falkland Islands Cricket Team
The Falkland Islands national cricket team is the team that represents the British overseas territory of the Falkland Islands in international cricket. The team is organised by the Falkland Cricket Association, which became an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on 29 June 2007 (although Argentina abstained from the vote admitting it as a member) and became an associate member in 2017. The Falkland Islands played its first international match in February 2004, playing against Chile in Santiago. Rugby union in the Falkland Islands is a moderately popular sport. Governing body Rugby union is played in the Falkland Islands under the auspices of the (English) Rugby Football Union. Dragon Cup In June & July 2019, the Mount Pleasant Camp RFC took on the Falkland Islands RFC in a best-of-three series for the inaugural Dragon Cup, which the MPC team won. The two teams compete regularly. History Rugby was first introduced to the Falkland Islands in the 19th Century, and is always of the union variety. Due to the low population of the islands (under 4,000), the islands do not have a proper league system, and games are played on an informal basis. The Falkland Islands Football League (FIFL), Branded ''Stanley Services Ltd. Football League'' is the national governing body of football in the Falkland Islands. The association operates the national team and the Stanley Services League, the only domestic league on the islands. They also sponsor an all-star team from the league, called Stanley F.C. who occasionally play friendly matches against stationed troops on the islands and Royal Navy makeshift teams. Falkland Islands National Football Team
The Falkland Islands official football team is a representative football team of the Falkland Islands, organised by the Falkland Islands Football League. The Falkland Islands Football League does not belong to the CONMEBOL, as its member countries support Argentina in the sovereignty conflict, and therefore neither can it be a member of FIFA. Thus, the team is not eligible to play in official competitions such as the World Cup and the Copa América. The team has played in the Island Games in 2001, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017. Stanley (; also known as Port Stanley) is the capital city of the Falkland Islands. It is located on the island of East Falkland, on a north-facing slope in one of the wettest parts of the islands. At the 2016 census, the city had a population of 2,460. The entire population of the Falkland Islands was 3,398 on Census Day on 9 October 2016. Falklands Islands Rifle Association
The Falkland Islands Rifle Association(FIRA) is the governing body for Fullbore target rifle shooting on the Falkland Islands. The Association has been in existence since 1885. FIRA is a member of the Falklands National Sports Council, which sends teams to the Commonwealth Games. History Shooting matches were held with personnel from visiting British warships from 1888 to 1979 fairly regularly. During the period 1888 to 1955 the club won 40 matches and the visiting ships four. Records of the club's history from 1955 to 1973 were lost during the Falklands War in 1982. Sheep Shearing
Sheep shearing is the process by which the woollen fleece of a sheep is cut off. The person who removes the sheep's wool is called a '' shearer''. Typically each adult sheep is shorn once each year (a sheep may be said to have been "shorn" or "sheared", depending upon dialect). The annual shearing most often occurs in a shearing shed, a facility especially designed to process often hundreds and sometimes more than 3,000 sheep per day. Sheep are shorn in all seasons, depending on the climate, management requirements and the availability of a woolclasser and shearers.
