Spoegwolf () is an Afrikaans rock band from Paarl, South Africa, founded in 2012. The group consists of Moskou du Toit (drums, percussion) Chris von Wielligh (guitar, piano), Albert van der Merwe (bass guitar, vocals, rap), and Danie du Toit (vocals, guitar). History The members of Spoegwolf began playing music together while they were still in high school, and they eventually named themselves Ysterkoei and won several competitions, which eventually led to a recording contract with Paris Recording Studios. In 2012, they changed their name to Spoegwolf and the same year, released their debut album, ''Swaartekrag''. The group followed up with ''Somer'' in 2015, which contains the song "Glenda", a reference to South African stripper, activist, and teacher Glenda Kemp. Glenda Kemp
Glenda Kemp (born 1949) is a South African stripper, activist, and teacher. Early life Glenda Kemp was born in the Cape Province on 13 May 1949. As a young girl, she lived in the working class suburb of La Rochelle with her mother, stepfather, and younger brother. Her two older siblings were in an orphanage in Potchefstroom; she was later to be sent to the orphanage too. Kemp was adopted by ''Tannie'' and ''Oom'' Baumbach into their Christian home in the small farming town of Swartruggens. In 1969, she enrolled into the Teachers' Training College in Potchefstroom. It was here she discovered dancing; her skill would be appreciated, as well as detested by many in the future. She later transferred to the Goudstad Teachers' Training College in Johannesburg to continue dancing in Go-go dancing clubs. Paarl
Paarl (; Afrikaans: ; derived from ''Parel'', meaning "pearl" in Dutch) is a town with 112,045 inhabitants in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is the third-oldest city and European settlement in the Republic of South Africa (after Cape Town and Stellenbosch) and the largest town in the Cape Winelands. Afrikaans (, ) is a West Germanic language that evolved in the Dutch Cape Colony from the Dutch vernacular of Holland proper (i.e., the Hollandic dialect) used by Dutch, French, and German settlers and their enslaved people. Ghoema Music Awards
The Ghoema Music Awards is an annual South African award ceremony that recognises outstanding achievement in the Afrikaans music industry. It is the only independent music award ceremony of its kind in South Africa. The event was established in 2012 and the awards are presented by the Ghoema Trust. The ceremony is held in March every year, and contenders are judged on performances made in the previous year. The show broadcasts on KykNET. History The awards were founded in 2012 by Barry Pretorius. The Ghoema Music Award came under heavy criticism in 2019 when the decision was made to remove the hit song "Die Land", sung by various artists, thereby blocking any recognition the song has achieved. The public was outraged and peer artists who won at the Awards made it clear that "Die Land" would have won was it not for political meddling in Afrikaans music by the Ghoemas. Francois Van Coke
Francois Badenhorst, better known by his stage name Francois Van Coke, rose to fame as the front man of South African rock bands Fokofpolisiekar and Van Coke Kartel. On the 8 April 2015, Francois launched his self-titled debut solo album and kicked his solo career into gear with the release of – ''Toe Vind Ek Jou'' featuring Karen Zoid. It was the first Afrikaans album and single to simultaneously jump to number one positions on the South African iTunes Store. The song was downloaded more than 20,000 times on iTunes, achieving Platinum status as a single. The music video for "Toe Vind Ek Jou" was viewed over a million times within six-month and was announced as the biggest Afrikaans music video of 2015.
