Spit Of Nizhny Novgorod
The Spit of Nizhny Novgorod ( short name is the Spit or Strelka) is one of the main natural landmarks in the historical centre of Nizhny Novgorod. It is located at the confluence of the Oka and Volga rivers. Description The Spit separates the Oka and the Volga. In the past, it was a port for cargo ships arriving and departing Nizhny Novgorod. The Spit is also the location of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. There is the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium for the 2018 FIFA World Cup on the Spit. The Strelka metro station was also launched in 2018. History From the 16th to the 20th century In the times of the Russian Tsardom, the Spit (Strelka) was the center of the Strelitzky camp of Nizhny Novgorod Uyezd, thereby receiving its name. Stroganov Church
Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (russian: Церковь Собора Пресвятой Богородицы), better known as Nativity or Stroganov is a Russian Orthodox church, located at the Rozhdestvenskaya Street in Nizhny Novgorod. It was built in 1696–1719 on the means of the merchant Grigory Stroganov. It is one of the best examples of Stroganov style, it has the status of a monument of architecture of federal significance. History The construction of the church began in 1696. The construction was almost completed by 1701, but a fire broke out in the temple. The burnt down church was restored by the wife of merchant Grigory Dmitrievich Stroganov - Maria Yakovlevna. It was consecrated in 1719 by Archbishop Pitirim of Nizhny Novgorod and Alatyr (1719-1738). In 1722, the church was closed by Peter the Great until his death (1725). The All-Russia industrial and art exhibition 1896 in Nizhny Novgorod was held from May 28 (June 9 N.S.) till October 1 (13 N.S.), 1896. The 1896 exhibition was the largest pre-revolution exhibition in the Russian Empire and was organized with money allotted by Nicholas II, Emperor of Russia. The All-Russia industrial conference was held together with the exhibition. The bombing of Gorky by the German ''Luftwaffe'' was the most destructive attack on Soviet war production on the Eastern Front (World War II), Eastern Front in World War II. It lasted intermittently from October 1941 - June 1943, with 43 raids carried out. The main target was the GAZ, Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ), which was manufacturing T-60 light infantry tanks. Defences proved inadequate, though a full-size dummy model of the main factory, and a ‘false village’ of painted images on the ground, caused some confusion to enemy pilots. The whole plant was eventually destroyed, and an inquiry immediately demanded by Stalin. The plant was reconstructed in four months.
