Spirasi
Spirasi (Spiritan Asylum Services Initiative) is the Irish national independent centre for the rehabilitation of victims of torture. History Spirasi, the Spiritan Asylum Services Initiative, was founded in 1999 as an English language centre by the Congregation of the Holy Spirit. From 2001, the organisation began to provide victims of torture in Ireland with legal, medical, psychological, and psychosocial support. The first director of the torture-survivors' programme was Father Michael Begley. An asylum seeker is a person who leaves their country of residence, enters another country and applies for asylum (i.e., international protection) in that other country. An asylum seeker is an immigrant who has been forcibly displaced and might have fled their home country because of war or other factors harming them or their family. If their case is accepted, they become considered a refugee. The terms ''asylum seeker'', ''refugee'' and ''illegal immigrant'' are often confused. A person becomes an asylum seeker by making a formal application for the right to remain in another country and keeps that status until the application has been concluded. Y is a woman who unsuccessfully sought to have an abortion in the Republic of Ireland. She is an asylum seeker who arrived in Ireland and became suicidal after discovered she was pregnant as a result of a rape in her home country. At the time, Ireland's abortion laws limited abortion in nearly all cases. She was unable to travel to the UK for an abortion, and after a hunger strike the High Court granted an order to hydrate her against her will. After the 1992 X Case judgement, abortion should be legal in cases of suicide, and the then newly introduced Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act 2013 allows abortion in those cases. The Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland (MASI) is an Irish advocacy group for those seeking international protection in Ireland, with the goals of ending direct provision and deportation. History MASI was founded in 2014 after the protests in Direct Provision Centres to give a voice to, and advocate for, those living in Direct Provision and seeking asylum in Ireland. One of the founding members of MASI was Lucky Khambule. The group argues that the privatised nature of Direct Provision Centres in Ireland results in chronic issues regarding health, hygiene, and civil and human rights of those housed there. They held their first conference in Liberty Hall, Dublin in October 2019, with a keynote from MASI spokesperson Bulelani Mfaco.
