Space Boy (1973 Film)
''Space Boy'' is a 1973 short science fiction film directed by Austrian artist Renate Druks. It was written by Florence Marly and featured music from electronic music pioneers Bebe and Louis Barron. It's rumored that Frank Zappa drummed on the soundtrack. The film was nominated for a Grand Prix at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival. Stuart Thomson plays the titular Space Boy and writer Florence Marly is the cosmic seductress Valana. Renate Druks
Renate Druks (2 January 1921 – 15 December 2007) was an American painter and filmmaker. She worked in Los Angeles, where she also practiced Thelema, the occult religious movement established by Aleister Crowley. She acted as a muse (source of inspiration), muse to other artists including Anaïs Nin, Marjorie Cameron and Kenneth Anger. Druks was born in Vienna on 2 January 1921 into a Jewish family and went on to study at the Vienna Art Academy for Women. In 1938, she and her American husband fled Austria for the United States with their son, Peter. She studied further at the Art Students League, spent several years in Mexico, and eventually settled in Los Angeles. She threw lavish parties at her Malibu, California, Malibu home, one of which becamse the inspiration for Anger's 1954 film, ''Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome''. Florence Marly (2 June 1919 – 9 November 1978) was a Czech-born French film actress. During World War II, Marly moved to neutral Argentina with her Jewish husband, film director Pierre Chenal, where she appeared in several films. She also acted in two of her husband's films while they were in Chile. Career Marly was born Hana Smékalová in Obrnice, Czechoslovakia. She studied French and her dream was to become an opera singer. At age 18 she went to Paris to study art, literature, and philosophy at Sorbonne. She met her future husband Pierre Chenal who cast her in his film ''The Alibi''. She played a major role in René Clément's ''Les Maudits'', a fictionalized account showing the fate of Nazi refugees. Bebe Barron ( – ) and Louis Barron ( – ) were two American pioneers in the field of electronic music. They are credited with writing the first electronic music for magnetic tape composed in the United States, and the first entirely electronic film score for the MGM movie ''Forbidden Planet'' (1956). Gene Curtis Harrington (September 17, 1926 – May 6, 2007) was an American film and television director whose work included experimental films, horror films and episodic television. He is considered one of the forerunners of New Queer Cinema. Life and career Early life Harrington was born on September 17, 1926 in Los Angeles, the son of Isabel (Dorum) and Raymond Stephen Harrington. He grew up in Beaumont, California.
