The Sovereign Award for Outstanding Broodmare is a Canadian Thoroughbred horse racing honor created in 1975 by the Jockey Club of Canada. It is part of the Sovereign Awards program and is a lifetime achievement award given annually to a top broodmare in Canada. Thoroughbred
The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. Although the word ''thoroughbred'' is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed. Thoroughbreds are considered " hot-blooded" horses that are known for their agility, speed, and spirit. The Thoroughbred, as it is known today, was developed in 17th- and 18th-century England, when native mares were crossbred with imported Oriental stallions of Arabian, Barb, and Turkoman breeding. All modern Thoroughbreds can trace their pedigrees to three stallions originally imported into England in the 17th and 18th centuries, and to a larger number of foundation mares of mostly English breeding. Broodmare
A mare is an adult female horse or other equine. In most cases, a mare is a female horse over the age of three, and a filly is a female horse three and younger. In Thoroughbred horse racing, a mare is defined as a female horse more than four years old. The word can also be used for other female equine animals, particularly mules and zebras, but a female donkey is usually called a "jenny". A broodmare is a mare used for breeding. Fanfreluche (horse)
Fanfreluche (April 9, 1967 – July 29, 1999) was a Canadian-bred Champion Thoroughbred racehorse. Background Fanfreluche was a bay mare bred in Canada. She was named by her French-Canadian owner Jean-Louis Levesque for the title character of a popular children's television show on the French-language division of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Racing career Successfully raced in Canada as a two-year-old, at age three Fanfreluche's performances in both Canada and the United States earned her the Sovereign Award for Canadian Horse of the Year. Fanfreluche was voted American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly in 1970 by the Thoroughbred Racing Association. No Class (horse)
No Class (March 30, 1974 – 1993) was a Canadian Hall of Fame Thoroughbred racehorse. Background Bred by Jack Hood of Stratford, Ontario, No Class was out of Classy Quillo, whose damsire was Princequillo. Her sire, Nodouble, was an outstanding runner who was voted American Co-Champion Older Male Horse honours in 1969 and 1970 and was the leading sire in North America in 1981. No Class was purchased by Sam-Son Farms for $25,000 at the 1975 Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society yearling sale. Breeding record While No Class had limited success on the track, her 1997 induction in the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame was in recognition of her contribution to racing as a broodmare. Classy 'n Smart (May 20, 1981 – September 28, 1999) was a Canadian Hall of Fame Thoroughbred racehorse. Bred and raced by Sam-Son Farm, she won five of nine career starts, including two legs of what would later be known as the Canadian Triple Tiara. Although she was voted the 1984 Canadian Champion 3-Year-Old Filly, her primary legacy is as a champion broodmare. Background Classy 'n Smart was bred by and raced for Ernie Samuel's Sam-Son Farm. She was trained by Jim Day, an Olympic gold medal winner in show jumping who became a Sovereign Award winning racehorse trainer. Dance Smartly (1988–2007) was a Champion Thoroughbred racemare who went undefeated in 1991 while winning the Canadian Triple Crown and becoming the first horse bred in Canada to ever win a Breeders' Cup race. She was inducted into both the Canadian and American Racing Halls of Fame. Bred in Ontario by Ernie Samuel's Sam-Son Farm, Dance Smartly was a bay mare with a distinctive white star on her forehead that earned her the nickname Daisy. She was by Danzig, one of Northern Dancer's most influential sire sons. Her dam was the Canadian Hall of Fame mare Classy 'n Smart by Smarten. She was trained by Jim Day. Eye Of The Sphynx
Eye of the Sphynx (foaled 2001 in Ontario) is a Canadian Sovereign Award, Champion Thoroughbred horse racing, racehorse and successful broodmare. Bred and raced by Sam-Son Farm, Eye of the Sphynx was trained by Mark Frostad. At age three, she won Canada's most important race for three-year-old fillies, the Woodbine Oaks. Her overall performance for that year earned her the 2004 Sovereign Award for Champion 3-Year-Old Filly. In 2014, Eye of the Sphynx received the Sovereign Award for Outstanding Broodmare.
