Southside District
The AA Southside District is one of the four districts of AA Region I of the Virginia High School League. While most of the other teams in Region I are located in Hampton Roads, these high schools are found in the Southside region of Virginia southwest of Richmond. AA Region I
The Virginia High School League (VHSL) is the principal sanctioning organization for interscholastic athletic competition among public high schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The VHSL first sponsored debate and also continues to sponsor state championships in several academic activities. Private and religious schools and teams of homeschooled students belong to other sanctioning organizations, the largest of which is the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association. Proposals in the Virginia General Assembly to mandate that the VHSL allow homeschooled students to compete for the public high school they would otherwise attend have failed to pass. Courtland, Virginia
Courtland is an incorporated town in Southampton County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,295 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Southampton County. History Originally named "Jerusalem" by the first colonists to settle in the region, the town was given its present name in 1888. It served as Southampton County's only town through the 18th century. The town was formed in 1791 on the north shore of the Nottoway River, on a parcel of ten acres (40,000 m2) beside the courthouse, and has been the county seat since then. In 1831, the town became well known as the site of the trials and subsequent executions of Nat Turner and some of his cohort who had planned a major slave rebellion. Farmville is a town in Prince Edward and Cumberland counties in the U.S. state of Virginia. The population was 8,216 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Prince Edward County. Powhatan County () is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 30,033. Its county seat is Powhatan. Powhatan County is included in the Greater Richmond Region. The James River forms the county's northern border, and the Appomattox River is on the south side. The county is named for the paramount chief of the powerful confederacy of tribes of Algonquian-speaking Native Americans in the Tidewater in 1607, when the British settled at Jamestown. Historically this Piedmont area had been occupied by the Siouan-speaking Monacan. They moved further west, abandoning villages in this area, under pressure from colonists. Powhatan, Virginia
Powhatan is a census-designated place in and the county seat of Powhatan County, Virginia, United States. Powhatan was initially known as Scottville (after Revolutionary war hero General Charles Scott), and historically has also been known as Powhatan Court House and Powhatan Courthouse. It is named after Chief Powhatan, father of Matoaka (Pocahontas). The first official court of Powhatan was held at Mosby Tavern, the home of Benjamin Mosby and his son, Littleberry Mosby. Powhatan was established as a community in May 1777, but there were several buildings already in existence at that time. One of these locations is the Powhatan Plantation which was built in 1735. Powhatan High School
Powhatan High School is a public high school in Powhatan County, Virginia. It serves 1412 students and is the only high school in they Powhatan County Public Schools school system. History Powhatan High School was held in a number of different buildings in the 1900s; the building used from 1971 to 2003 was later used as Pocahontas Middle School from 2003 to 2016, now called Pocahontas Landmark Center and used as the school board office. The school was racially integrated in 1969. The current facility opened in 2003.
