Western Australian Legislative Council
The Western Australian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Western Australia, a state of Australia. It is regarded as a house of review for legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly, the lower house. The two Houses of Parliament sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Perth. Effective on 20 May 2005, for the election of members of the Legislative Council, the State was divided into 6 electoral regions by community of interest —3 metropolitan and 3 rural—each electing 6 members to the Legislative Council.. The 2005 changes continued to maintain the previous malapportionment in favour of rural regions. Legislation was passed in 2021 to abolish these regions and increase the size of the council to 37 seats, all of which will be elected by the state-at-large. George Bennetts
George Bennetts (11 April 1890 - 27 March 1980) was an Australian politician. He was an Australian Labor Party member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1946 to 1965, representing South-East Province. Bennetts was born at Wallaroo Mines in South Australia, but his family moved to the Kalgoorlie-Boulder area of Western Australia in 1896. His family's situation during his time in Boulder was reportedly "beset with difficulties", living in a home of hessian and bags and struggling with insufficient water rations. He was educated at Collick's school, the convent school on the Horseshoe Lease and the South Boulder School, but left school at fourteen. He was a builders' labourer, worked in the bicycle trade and carted sandalwood before joining the Western Australian Government Railways in 1911. David Black (historian)
David William Black (born 1936) is a Western Australian historian. He has lectured and written extensively on Australian and Western Australian history, especially political history. He was Professor in History and Politics in the School of Social Sciences and Asian Languages at Curtin University of Technology until his retirement in 2002, and is now professor emeritus. He is currently Chairperson of the Parliamentary History Advisory Committee, and a Parliamentary Fellow (History). John Caldwell (Australian Politician)
John Norman Caldwell (19 December 1934 – 2 August 2000) was an Australian farmer and politician who served as a National Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1986 to 1993. Caldwell was born in Katanning, in Western Australia's Great Southern region. He boarded at Scotch College, Perth, and after leaving school returned to work on the family farm in Badgebup, which he eventually took over. Caldwell became prominent in agricultural circles, and also represented Western Australia in rifle shooting on five occasions. David John Wordsworth (born 9 June 1930) is a former Australian politician who was a Liberal Party of Australia (Western Australian Division), Liberal Party member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1971 to 1993. He served as a minister in the government of Sir Charles Court. Wordsworth was born in Kashmir, India, to Margaret Joan (née Reynolds) and Robert Wordsworth. Sydney Thomas Joseph Thompson (21 February 1906 – 1 August 1994) was an Australian politician who served as a Country Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1960 to 1974. Thompson was born in Wagin, Western Australia, to Annie Agnes (née Carpenter) and James William Thompson. He left school in 1921 and worked on his parents' farm until 1928, when he bought his own property. Thompson became prominent in local agricultural circles, serving as president of the Wagin Agricultural Society and the local branch of the farmers' union. Anthony Lloyd Loton (13 February 1904 – 14 May 1998) was an Australian politician who served as a Country Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1944 to 1965. He was President of the Legislative Council from 1954 to 1958. Loton was born in Upper Swan, Western Australia, to Annie Campbell ( Forrest) and Ernest William Loton. Hugh Lewis Roche (5 November 1893 – 15 July 1962) was an Australian politician who served as a Country Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1940 to 1960. Roche was born in York, Western Australia, to Maria Josephine (née Lockyer) and Hugh Henry Roche. He completed his early schooling in York before boarding at Christian Brothers' College, Perth. Roche enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in January 1915, and during the war served with the 10th Light Horse, reaching the rank of warrant officer by the war's end. The National Party of Australia (WA) Inc, branded The Nationals WA, is a political party in Western Australia. It is affiliated with the National Party of Australia but maintains a separate structure and identity. Since the 2021 state election, the Nationals WA is the senior party in an opposition alliance with the WA Liberal Party in the WA Parliament. Prior to the election, the National Party was sitting in the crossbench and the Liberal Party was the sole opposition party.
