Hugh Roche
Hugh Lewis Roche (5 November 1893 – 15 July 1962) was an Australian politician who served as a Country Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1940 to 1960. Roche was born in York, Western Australia, to Maria Josephine (née Lockyer) and Hugh Henry Roche. He completed his early schooling in York before boarding at Christian Brothers' College, Perth. Roche enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in January 1915, and during the war served with the 10th Light Horse, reaching the rank of warrant officer by the war's end. He was discharged in February 1920, and worked in Perth as a clerk for a period before going to farm in Kojonup. He served on the Kojonup Road Board from 1926 to 1940. 10th Light Horse Regiment (Australia)
The 10th Light Horse Regiment is a "mounted infantry" regiment of the Australian Army Reserve, raised in Western Australia (WA). While the name of the 10th Light Horse originated in the first months of World War I, the regiment traces its ceremonial lineage to mounted infantry units of the Colonial militia of Western Australia, raised during the late 19th century, such as the Western Australian Mounted Infantry. Consequently, its battle honours include: "South Africa" (Boer War) and; " Gallipoli", " Gaza-Beersheba", "Jerusalem", "Megiddo" and " Damascus" (World War I). Kojonup is a town south-east of Perth, Western Australia along Albany Highway in the Great Southern (Western Australia), Great Southern region. The name Kojonup refers to the "Kodja" or stone axe made by Aboriginal Australians, from the local stone. History The Noongar people are the traditional owners and inhabitants of Kojonup. Specifically, the Noongar people of Kojonup today are descendants of the Kaneang language group and their neighbours, such as the Koreng, Pinjareb and Menang. Historically the Noongar people drank from the local freshwater spring and hunted game with the traditional Noongar "kodj", or stone axe. Both Kojonup and The Kodja Place are named after the historically significant implement. First Australian Imperial Force
The First Australian Imperial Force (1st AIF) was the main expeditionary force of the Australian Army during the First World War. It was formed as the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) following Britain's declaration of war on Germany on 15 August 1914, with an initial strength of one infantry division and one light horse brigade. The infantry division subsequently fought at Gallipoli between April and December 1915, with a newly raised second division, as well as three light horse brigades, reinforcing the committed units. After being evacuated to Egypt, the AIF was expanded to five infantry divisions, which were committed to the fighting in France and Belgium along the Western Front in March 1916. The Western Australian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Western Australia, a state of Australia. It is regarded as a house of review for legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly, the lower house. The two Houses of Parliament sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Perth. Effective on 20 May 2005, for the election of members of the Legislative Council, the State was divided into 6 electoral regions by community of interest —3 metropolitan and 3 rural—each electing 6 members to the Legislative Council..
