South Darenth
South Darenth is a village in the civil parish of Horton Kirby and South Darenth in the Sevenoaks District of Kent, England. It is located 4.2 miles east of Swanley & 4.4 miles south of Dartford. Village South Darenth boasts a supermarket, a cafe, a newsagent, a hairdresser and a post office/pharmacy, as well as three public houses: the Jolly Miller on East Hill, The Queen on New Road and The Bridges on the corner of Horton Road and Station Road, which was run by former wrestler Wayne Bridges. The small retained fire station has now closed. The village hosts a small brewery on St Margaret's Farm, called Millis, which supplies some of the pubs in the surrounding area. The South Darenth Village Society organises a number of events, often in conjunction with neighboring Horton Kirby. Horton Kirby and South Darenth, formerly just Horton Kirby is a civil parish in the Sevenoaks (district), Sevenoaks district of Kent, England. The parish is located in the River Darent valley between Sevenoaks town and Dartford: it consists of the two villages of Horton Kirby and South Darenth. On 1 April 1979 the parish was renamed from "Horton Kirby" to "Horton Kirby & South Darenth". Horton Kirby Paper Mills in South Darenth were founded by Henry Hall at the beginning of the 19th century. Since June 2003, the mills have ceased processing paper. Joseph Cubitt
Joseph Cubitt (24 November 1811 – 7 December 1872) was an English civil engineer. Amongst other projects, he designed the Blackfriars Railway Bridge over the River Thames in London. Early life Cubitt was born in Horning, Norfolk, on 24 November 1811. He was the son of William Cubitt, Sir William Cubitt and Abigail Sparkhall (1785-1813). After his mother's death, his father married Elizabeth Jane Tiley in 1820. From his father's second marriage, he had a younger half-brother, William, born 1830. He was educated at Bruce Castle School in Tottenham. He was trained for the profession of civil engineer by his father. Career Cubitt constructed a great part of the London and South-Western Railway, the whole of the Great Northern Railway (Great Britain), Great Northern Railway, the London, Chatham, and Dover Railway, the Rhymney Railway, the Oswestry and Newtown Railway, and the Colne Valley Railway.
