South Bound Railroad
The South Bound Railroad was a Southeastern railroad that operated in South Carolina and Georgia in the late 19th century and early 20th century. History The South Bound Railroad was chartered by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1882 and by the Georgia Legislature in 1888. The 136-mile line from Savannah, Georgia, to Columbia, South Carolina, opened in 1891. The following year it was leased to the Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad. By the end of the decade, the South Bound Railroad had reached Camden, South Carolina, to meet the Chesterfield and Kershaw Railroad. Georgia, Carolina And Northern Railway
The Georgia, Carolina and Northern Railway was a Southeastern railroad that began after Reconstruction and operated up until the start of the 20th century. It ran from Monroe, North Carolina to Atlanta, Georgia and later became part of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. History Construction and early years The Georgia, Carolina and Northern Railway was founded in 1886 with the goal of building a line from Monroe, North Carolina, to Atlanta, Georgia. Construction on the line began in 1887 in North Carolina. By 1892 the railroad had almost completed its original plan when a court injunction halted its progress into Atlanta. As a result, the GC&N developed the Seaboard Air Line Belt Railroad. The Seaboard Air Line Belt Railroad ran about from Belt Junction (near Emory University) west to the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway for which the Georgia, Carolina and Northern Railway had trackage rights into Atlanta. The Pittsboro Railroad was a railroad that historically ran from Moncure, North Carolina to Pittsboro, North Carolina, a distance of about 10.5 miles. The line became part of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad and operated as the company's Pittsboro Subdivision. History The Pittsboro Railroad was first chartered in 1885 and construction began on November 16, 1885. About $15,000 were raised for the construction of the line by township bonds and local citizens. The line was completed a year later and its first passenger train operated on December 20, 1886. The Richmond, Petersburg and Carolina Railroad was a railroad built in the early 1900s. As its name suggests, it ran from Richmond, Virginia south through Petersburg into northern North Carolina. It was a key part of the network of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. History The Richmond, Petersburg and Carolina Railroad was chartered in 1882 by the Virginia General Assembly and was initially known as the Virginia and Carolina Railroad. After it was chartered, the railroad did not have the financial resources to begin construction. In 1897, the charter was sold to the city of Petersburg who renamed it the Richmond, Petersburg and Carolina Railroad and construction started. The Loganville and Lawrenceville Railroad (L&L) was founded in 1898 and operated a line between Loganville and Lawrenceville, Georgia, USA.
