The South Australian Derby is a South Australian Jockey Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds, at set weights, run over a distance of 2,500 metres at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide, Australia during the SAJC Autumn Carnival. History The inaugural running of the race was on 5 January 1860 at Thebarton Racecourse which is located today in Mile End. The race was called The Thebarton Derby and had stakes of 100 sovereigns with an additional sweep of 10 sovereigns with a forfeit of 2 sovereigns. The race was won by the famous colonial pastoralist C.B. Fisher's, four-year-old mare Midnight who carried 8 stone 10 pounds and ridden by jockey Simpson in a time of 2:54. Auraria (foaled 1892) was an Australian racehorse that won the 1895 Melbourne Cup. Racing career Auraria was bred at St Albans stud in Victoria and bought for 280 guineas by David James of Kapunda. Rebel Raider
Rebel Raider was a notable Australian Thoroughbred race horse. A son of Reset (AUS) from the mare Picholine (AUS), he was foaled in 2005 and was trained throughout his career by Leon Macdonald. Racing record Rebel Raider was the longest priced winner (100/1) in the history of the Victoria Derby and the first winner ridden by a female jockey, Clare Lindop. However, his long-price in the Derby belied his ability as he also recorded wins in the 2009 South Australian Derby, 2009 Chairman's Stakes and the 2010 Spring Stakes. The Adelaide Cup is a South Australian Jockey Club Group 2 Thoroughbred handicap horse race for three-year-olds and older, run over 3,200 metres at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide, Australia on the second Monday in March. Total prize money for the race is A$302,250. History The first Adelaide Cup was raced on 21 April 1864 at Thebarton Racecourse, where Mile End is today. Subzero (horse)
Subzero, nicknamed "Subbie" (26 September 1988 – 29 August 2020), was an Australian thoroughbred racehorse that won the 1992 Melbourne Cup. Life and career Subzero was foaled in Australia. Trained by Lee Freedman and ridden by veteran jockey Greg Hall, the four-year-old revelled in the rain-affected going in the 1992 Melbourne Cup to defeat the favourite, Veandercross, and the two-miler Castletown. The win was to be Subzero's last, but as one of the few grey winners of the race in the post-War era, his fame was assured.
