South Alloa Railway Station
South Alloa railway station, located south of the River Forth, served the village of South Alloa, Scotland and the town of Alloa via a ferry link from 1850 to 1885. History The station was opened on 2 September 1850 as Alloa by the Scottish Central Railway (SCR) as the northern terminus of a branch from their to Stirling main line. The branch ran from and was known as the ''Alloa Branch'', in the opening notification in the newspaper, or ''South Alloa Branch'', on the OS map. The station was about south of the ferry pier where ferries ran across the Forth to Alloa pier, a short distance from station. In 1860 the station consisted of a small building with one platform on a run-around loop, there were several sidings and a goods shed, close by to the west was a connection to some coke ovens. South Alloa
South Alloa is a small village which lies in the far north of the Falkirk council area of Scotland. The village is on the south bank of the River Forth where the river empties and widens to form the Firth of Forth. To the west of the village lies the island of Alloa Inch, and directly to the north across the Forth is the town of Alloa, located away. Upstream and west-northwest is the city of Stirling and south is Falkirk, the principal town of the Falkirk council area. It lies just inside the council boundary line between Falkirk and Stirling councils. The village lies off the A905 road between Dunmore and Throsk. The village is at a former ferry crossing point across the River Forth to Alloa. Between 1850 and 1885 South Alloa railway station was the terminus of a line originally built by Scottish Central Railway. The village had 112 residents in 2011, a 49% increase since the 2001 census. Falkirk (; sco, Fawkirk; gd, An Eaglais Bhreac) is one of 32 unitary authority council areas of Scotland. It was formed on 1 April 1996 by way of the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994 from the exact boundaries of Falkirk District, one of three parts of the Central region created in 1975, which was abolished at that time. Scottish Central Railway
The Scottish Central Railway was formed in 1845 to link Perth and Stirling to Central Scotland, by building a railway line to join the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway near Castlecary. The line opened in 1848 including a branch to South Alloa. The line immediately became part of the forming trunk railway network in Scotland, and amalgamation with other railways was considered, and in 1865 the Scottish Central Railway amalgamated with the Caledonian Railway. The Caledonian Railway (CR) was a major Scottish railway company. It was formed in the early 19th century with the objective of forming a link between English railways and Glasgow. It progressively extended its network and reached Edinburgh and Aberdeen, with a dense network of branch lines in the area surrounding Glasgow. The River Forth is a major river in central Scotland, long, which drains into the North Sea on the east coast of the country. Stirling And Dunfermline Railway
The Stirling and Dunfermline Railway was a railway in Scotland connecting Stirling and Dunfermline. It was planned by the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway to get access to the mineral deposits on the line of route, but also as a tactical measure to keep the rival Caledonian Railway out of Fife. Alloa Swing Bridge
The Alloa Swing Bridge was a railway swing bridge across the River Forth that connected Throsk and Alloa as part of the Alloa Railway. The structure was in use from 1885 until 1968. History The Alloa Railway obtained authority through an Act of Parliament on 11 August 1879 to open a section of line linking the South Alloa Branch of the Scottish Central Railway to Alloa.
