The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) is the largest union in local government in South Africa. History The union was founded on 24 October 1987, when the Municipal Workers' Union of South Africa merged with the Cape Town Municipal Workers' Association (CTMWA), and the municipal workers' sections of General Workers' Union of South Africa, South African Allied Workers' Union and Transport and General Workers' Union. All of these unions were affiliates of the Congress of South African Trade Unions, to which SAMWU also affiliated. In later years, SAMWU absorbed the Durban Indian Municipal Employees' Society and the Union of Johannesburg Municipal Workers. Initially, the union grew rapidly, and by 1994 it had 100,410 members, 31.3% of all eligible workers. The South African Allied Workers' Union (SAAWU) was a general union in South Africa. The union was founded in 1978 as a split from the Black Allied Workers' Union by workers in Durban. It described itself as a federation, with a union in each industry, but this structure was never properly developed, and it was generally viewed as being a single union. Trade unions in South Africa has a history dating back to the 1880s. From the beginning unions could be viewed as a reflection of the racial disunity of the country, with the earliest unions being predominantly for white workers. Through the turbulent years of 1948–1991 trade unions played an important part in developing political and economic resistance, and eventually were one of the driving forces in realising the transition to an inclusive democratic government. Simon Matsobane Mathe is a South African politician and trade unionist who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature since 2019. He was formerly the General Secretary of the South African Municipal Workers' Union (SAMWU) from December 2015 until April 2019, when he and the union's other leaders were removed in a vote of no confidence. Durban Indian Municipal Employees' Society
The Durban Indian Municipal Employees' Society (DIMES) was a trade union representing municipal workers of Indian origin, in Durban in South Africa. The union was founded in 1936, and by 1943, it had 2,450 members. It affiliated to the South African Trades and Labour Council. In the 1940s, the union was led by Billy Peters, a member of the Communist Party of South Africa. It opposed apartheid, and in 1955 was a founding affiliate of the inclusive South African Congress of Trade Unions (SACTU). The Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU) was a trade union representing transport workers, and at times workers in other sectors, in South Africa. The union was founded in 1973, inspired by the PUTCO workers' strike in Transvaal the previous year. It set up headquarters in Johannesburg, but represented workers in Transvaal, Natal and the Eastern Cape. The majority of its members worked in passenger and good transport, but it also had significant membership in hospitals, cleaning, security and cement, in addition to municipal workers in all sectors. In 1974, the union affiliated to the Trade Union Advisory Co-ordinating Council, and in 1979 it was a founding affiliate of the Federation of South African Trade Unions (FOSATU). The General Workers' Union of South Africa (GWUSA) was a general union in South Africa. The union's origins lay in the split of the Port Elizabeth-based Motor Assemblers' and Component Workers' Union from the United Union of Automobile, Rubber and Allied Workers of South Africa. The Cape Town Municipal Workers' Association (CTMWA) was a trade union representing local government workers in Cape Town, South Africa. The union was founded in 1928 to represent "coloured" workers, and adopted a conservative approach, registering with the government. In 1964, the union was taken over by young organisers, active in the Non-European Unity Movement. They included long-term general secretary John Ernstzen. While they initially focused on limited, industrial, demands, by the 1970s the union was highly critical of apartheid and more politically active.
