Simon Mathe
Simon Matsobane Mathe is a South African politician and trade unionist who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature since 2019. He was formerly the General Secretary of the South African Municipal Workers' Union (SAMWU) from December 2015 until April 2019, when he and the union's other leaders were removed in a vote of no confidence. Career in SAMWU Mathe entered politics through SAMWU, an affiliate of the ANC-allied Congress of South African Trade Unions. He was formerly SAMWU's Provincial Secretary in Limpopo and by 2015 was the Deputy General Secretary of the national union. In late 2015, the incumbent General Secretary, Walter Theledi, was suspended from his office amid allegations of financial mismanagement; SAMWU's executive committee voted in December 2015 to replace him with Mathe. Limpopo Provincial Legislature
The Limpopo Provincial Legislature is the primary legislative body of the South African province of Limpopo. It is unicameral in its composition, and elects the premier and the provincial cabinet, the Limpopo Executive Council, from among the members of the leading party or coalition in the parliament. The first legislature was inaugurated in May 1994 as the Northern Transvaal Provincial Legislature. It was renamed in 1995 to the Northern Province Provincial Legislature, and again in 2003 to the Limpopo Provincial Legislature. The Sixth Legislature was elected on 8 May 2019 in South Africa's 2019 general election. A majority of the members belong to the African National Congress. The Provincial Executive Committees (PEC) of the African National Congress (ANC) are the chief executive organs of the party's nine provincial branches. Comprising the so-called Top Five provincial officials and up to 30 additional elected members, each is structured similarly to the ANC's National Executive Committee and is elected every four years at party provincial conferences. The Top Five officials at the head of the PEC are the ANC Provincial Chairperson, the political leader of the party in the province; the ANC Provincial Secretary, a full-time party functionary; their respective deputies; and the Provincial Treasurer.
