The ''South African Law Journal'' is a quarterly law journal published by Juta & Co. It is South Africa's leading law journal and the second oldest law journal in the world, after the ''University of Pennsylvania Law Review''. History The ''SALJ'' was established in Grahamstown in 1884, making it one year older than England's ''Law Quarterly Review'' and three years older than the '' Harvard Law Review''. Its first 17 volumes were published under the title ''Cape Law Journal'', before its name was changed to the ''South African Law Journal'' in 1901. Editors The ''SALJ'' was edited for much of its history at the University of the Witwatersrand Law School, first by Bobby Hahlo, and then for a period of over forty years by Ellison Kahn. Graham Glover
Graham Glover is a Professor in the Faculty of Law at Rhodes University and the youngest-ever editor of the ''South African Law Journal''. He teaches courses in the law of contract, sale, insurance, unjustified enrichment and also part of a course on Legal Skills. Career and research interests Glover became a lecturing academic in the Faculty of Law at Rhodes in 1998. After receiving his PhD degree in 2004 for a thesis entitled ''The Doctrine of Duress in the Law of Contract and Unjustified Enrichment in South Africa'', he was appointed senior lecturer in 2004, and in 2008 became an associate professor. Glover's research interests are mainly in the field of contract law: He has published nineteen journal articles in this area of law, and delivered several conference papers at local and international conferences and colloquia. Arthur Chaskalson
Arthur Chaskalson Order of the Baobab, SCOB, (24 November 1931 – 1 December 2012) was President of the Constitutional Court of South Africa from 1994 to 2001 and Chief Justice of South Africa from 2001 to 2005. Chaskalson was a member of the defence team in the Rivonia Trial of 1963. Career Born in Johannesburg, Chaskalson was educated at Hilton College (South Africa), Hilton College and later graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand with a BCom (1952) and LLB Cum Laude (1954). Oliver Schreiner
Oliver Deneys Schreiner Military Cross, MC King's Counsel, KC (29 December 1890 – 27 July 1980), was a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of South Africa. One of the most renowned South African judges, he was passed over twice for the position of Chief Justice of South Africa for political reasons. He was later described as "the greatest Chief Justice South Africa never had". Early life Schreiner was born in Cape Town in 1890, the son of William Philip Schreiner, the Prime Minister of the Cape Colony during the Second Boer War, Boer War, and his wife, Frances, a sister of Francis William Reitz, President F. Kate O'Regan
Catherine "Kate" O'Regan (born 17 September 1957) is a former judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, Constitutional Court of South Africa. From 2013 to 2014 she was a commissioner of the Khayelitsha Commission and is now the inaugural director of the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights at the University of Oxford. Early life O'Regan was born in Liverpool, England, into a large Catholic family of Irish immigrants. She moved to Cape Town when she was seven. Dikgang Ernest Moseneke (born 20 December 1947) is a South African judge and former Deputy Chief Justice of South Africa. Biography Moseneke was born in Pretoria and went to school there. Harold Luntz
Harold 'Harry' Luntz (born 1937 in South Africa) is an Australian law professor. He is widely acknowledged as one of Australia's leading experts on torts law. Career Luntz was educated at Athlone Boys' High School in Johannesburg and graduated from the University of Witwatersrand with degrees in arts and law. He served three years’ articles of clerkship at the same time as undertaking his law degree. Pius Langa
Pius Nkonzo Langa Order of the Baobab, SCOB (25 March 1939 – 24 July 2013) was Chief Justice of South Africa, serving on the Constitutional Court of South Africa, Constitutional Court. He was appointed to the bench in 1994 by Nelson Mandela, he became Deputy Chief Justice in 2001 and was elevated as Chief Justice in 2005 by Thabo Mbeki. He retired in October 2009. John Gilbert Kotzé
Sir John Gilbert Kotzé KC (5 November 1849 – 1 April 1940) was an eminent South African jurist. Early life Kotzé was born in Cape Town and was given the Christian names of Johannes Gysbert Blanckenberg, but he used the anglicized form, John Gilbert. He was educated at Tot Nut van het Algemeen and the South African College in Cape Town. His father was Petrus Johannes Kotzé, who owned the Leeuwenhof estate at the foot of Table Mountain and represented Cape Town in two Parliaments, as a member of the House of Assembly, and was twice Mayor of Cape Town. Sir Sydney Woolf Kentridge (born 5 November 1922) is a South African-born lawyer, judge and member of the Bar of England and Wales. He practised law in South Africa and the United Kingdom from the 1940s until his retirement in 2013. Leonard Hubert "Lennie" Hoffmann, Baron Hoffmann (born 8 May 1934) is a retired senior South African–British judge. He served as a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary from 1995 to 2009. Sir Bob Alexander Hepple (11 August 1934 – 21 August 2015) was a South African-born legal academic and leader in the fields of labour law, equality and human rights.
