South African Class 3 4-8-2
The South African Railways Class 3 of 1909 was a steam locomotive from the pre-Union era in the Colony of Natal. In 1909, the Natal Government Railways placed the world’s first true Mountain type locomotive in service when five Class B tender locomotives were commissioned. Another 25 were placed in service in 1911. In 1912, when they were assimilated into the South African Railways, they were renumbered and designated Class 3. The Mountain wheel arrangement went on to become the most numerous steam locomotive wheel configuration in use in South Africa.Classification of S.A.R. South African Type TJ Tender
The South African type TJ tender was a steam locomotive tender from the pre-Union era in the Natal Colony. The Type TJ tender first entered service in 1909, as tenders to the first five Mountain type steam locomotives which were acquired by the Natal Government Railways in that year. The South African Railways Class 1 4-8-0 of 1904 was a steam locomotive from the pre-Union era in the Colony of Natal. In 1904, the Natal Government Railways placed fifty Class B Mastodon type steam locomotives in service. Six of them were modified to a 4-8-2 Mountain type wheel arrangement in 1906. South African Class 14C 4-8-2, 3rd Batch
The South African Railways Class 14C 4-8-2 of 1919 was a steam locomotive. In late 1919, the South African Railways placed a third batch of twenty steam locomotives with a 4-8-2 Mountain type wheel arrangement in service. In addition to the first three batches, one more batch would be acquired in 1922, all four with different maximum axle loadings, to bring the total in the class to 73. Piston Valve (steam Engine)
Piston valves are one form of valve used to control the flow of steam within a steam engine or locomotive. They control the admission of steam into the cylinders and its subsequent exhausting, enabling a locomotive to move under its own power. The valve consists of two piston heads on a common spindle moving inside a steam chest, which is essentially a mini-cylinder located either above or below the main cylinders of the locomotive. The South African Railways Class 11 2-8-2 of 1904 was a steam locomotive from the pre-Union era in Transvaal Colony. In 1904, the Central South African Railways placed 36 Class 11 steam locomotives with a Mikado type wheel arrangement in service. Central South African Railways
The Central South African Railways (CSAR) was from 1902 to 1910 the operator of public railways in the Transvaal Colony and Orange River Colony in what is now South Africa. During the Anglo-Boer War, as British forces moved into the territory of the Orange Free State and the South African Republic, the Orange Free State Government Railways, the Netherlands-South African Railway Company and the Pretoria-Pietersburg Railway were taken over by the Imperial Military Railways under Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Percy Girouard.
