Bangui () (or Bangî in Sango, formerly written Bangi in English) is the capital and largest city of the Central African Republic. It was established as a French outpost in 1889 and named after its location on the northern bank of the Ubangi River (french: Oubangui); the Ubangi itself was named from the Bobangi word for the "rapids" located beside the settlement, which marked the end of navigable water north from Brazzaville. The Cincinnati Bearcats men's basketball program represents the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Central African Republic national basketball team is administered by the Fédération Centrafricaine de Basketball. The team won the African Basketball Championship twice. It became the first Sub-Saharan African team to qualify for the Basketball World Cup. Achievements The Central African Republic has won the African Championship twice. AfroBasket 2007 was the 24th FIBA Africa Championship, played under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de Basketball, the basketball sport governing body, and the African zone thereof.
