Soul Surfer (film)
''Soul Surfer'' is a 2011 American biographical drama film directed by Sean McNamara, based on the 2004 autobiography ''Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board'' by Bethany Hamilton about her life as a surfer after losing her left arm in a horrific shark attack and her recovery. The film stars AnnaSophia Robb, Helen Hunt, Dennis Quaid, and Lorraine Nicholson with Carrie Underwood, Kevin Sorbo, Sonya Balmores, Branscombe Richmond, and Craig T. Nelson. Filming took place in Hawaii in early 2010, with additional filming taking place in Tahiti in August 2010. Sean Patrick Michael McNamara (born May 9, 1962) is an American film director, film producer, actor, and screenwriter. McNamara was born in Burbank, California. He is best known for his feature films ''Soul Surfer'' and ''The Miracle Season''. In the pre-teen film market he worked with Jessica Alba, Hilary Duff, Shia LaBeouf, Christy Carlson Romano and Raven-Symoné. McNamara and David Brookwell are the founders of the Brookwell McNamara Entertainment production company. McNamara has continued to produce and create shows for MTV's The N, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, and Cartoon Network. ''Soul Surfer (Music From The Motion Picture)'' is the soundtrack to the 2011 film ''Soul Surfer'', released on April 5, 2011 by Rhino Records. The album featured numerous songs performed by artists James “Bla” Pahinui, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Britt Nicole, Brian Setzer and Two Door Cinema Club. It also had two original recordings written for the film: an original song "Runaway" by Mat Kearney and a cover of Katy Perry's 2010 hit single " Firework" by ''American Idol'' finalist Chris Sligh. Mat Kearney claimed that he met Bethany Hamilton (whom the film is based) in Hawaii, before the accident and impressed with her and when the film's biopic was under production, Keaney was offered to write a song from the production's music staff, thereby leading his track "Runaway" being made into the final soundtrack. Branscombe Richmond is an American character actor and stuntman. He is known for his starring role of Bobby Sixkiller on the American syndicated drama series, ''Renegade'' (1992–1997), and for his starring roles on the television series, ''Hawaiian Heat'' (1984) and '' Heart of the City'' (1986–1987). Sonya Balmores (born June 23, 1986) is an American actress, model, and surfer from Kalaheo, Hawaii who also competed in the Miss Teen USA pageant. Early life and education Balmores was born to a Filipino father and a mother of Irish and Native American descent. She attended Kalaheo Elementary School and graduated from Kauai High School. She was a visual communications student at Hawaii Pacific University. Modeling career Balmores won the Miss Hawaii Teen USA title on May 16, 2004 at the Waikiki Sheraton Resort. Balmores represented Hawaii in the Miss Teen USA 2004 pageant held in Palm Springs, California on August 6, 2004.
