''Sorghum arundinaceum'', the common wild sorghum, is a species of flowering plant in the family Poaceae. It is native to SubSaharan Africa, Madagascar, many of the Indian Ocean islands, and the Indian Subcontinent, and has been introduced to northern South America, the US states of California and Florida, Puerto Rico, Taiwan, New Guinea, and a number of smaller islands worldwide. It is the wild progenitor of cultivated sorghum, ''Sorghum bicolor'', with some authorities considering it to be a mere variety or subspecies; ''Sorghum bicolor'' var. Nicaise Auguste Desvaux
Nicaise Auguste Desvaux (28 August 1784 – 12 July 1856) was a French botanist. From 1816 he taught classes in Angers, where from 1817 to 1838 he served as director of its botanical garden. He described the botanical genera ''Neslia'', ''Mycenastrum'', ''Rostkovia'' and ''Didymoglossum''. The genus '' Desvauxia'' is named in his honor. Otto Stapf (botanist)
Otto Stapf FRS (23 April 1857, in Perneck near Bad Ischl – 3 August 1933, in Innsbruck) was an Austrian born botanist and taxonomist, the son of Joseph Stapf, who worked in the Hallstatt salt-mines. He grew up in Hallstatt and later published about the archaeological plant remains from the Late Bronze- and Iron Age mines that had been uncovered by his father. Stapf studied botany in Vienna under Julius Wiesner, where he received his PhD with a dissertation on cristals and cristalloids in plants. 1882 he became assistant professor (''Assistent'') of Anton Kerner. In 1887 he was made '' Privatdozent'' (lecturer without a chair) in Vienna. Poaceae () or Gramineae () is a large and nearly ubiquitous family of monocotyledonous flowering plants commonly known as grasses.
