Sonic Cd
is a 1993 platform game for the Sega CD developed and published by Sega. The story follows Sonic the Hedgehog as he attempts to save an extraterrestrial body, Little Planet, from Doctor Robotnik. Like other '' Sonic'' games, Sonic runs and jumps through several themed levels while collecting rings and defeating robots. ''Sonic CD'' is distinguished by its time travel feature, a key aspect to the story and gameplay. By traveling through time, players can access different versions of stages, featuring alternative layouts, music, and graphics. The Sega CD's flagship game, ''Sonic CD'' was conceived as an enhanced port of ''Sonic the Hedgehog 2'', but was reworked after lackluster sales of ''Sonic 2'' in Japan. Directed by Sonic co-creator Naoto Ohshima, the developers designed the game to show off the technical capabilities of the Sega CD. It features the debuts of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, and includes animated cutscenes. Two soundtracks were composed for the game: the origin ...

Sonic The Hedgehog (character)
is a title character and the main protagonist of the video game series of the same name published by Sega, and appears in numerous spin-off comics, animations, and other media. He is an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who can run at supersonic speeds and curl into a ball, primarily to attack enemies. In most games, Sonic must race through levels, collecting power-up rings and avoiding obstacles and enemies. Programmer Yuji Naka and artist Naoto Ohshima are generally credited with creating Sonic. Most of the games are developed by Sonic Team. The original ''Sonic the Hedgehog'' (1991) was released to provide Sega with a mascot to rival Nintendo's flagship character Mario. Sonic was redesigned by Yuji Uekawa for ''Sonic Adventure'' (1998), with a more mature look designed to appeal to older players. Sonic Origins
is a 2022 '' Sonic the Hedgehog'' video game compilation by Sega. It features remasters of the first four platform games in the ''Sonic'' series originally released for the Sega Genesis and the Sega CD; '' Sonic the Hedgehog'' (1991), ''Sonic the Hedgehog 2'' (1992), ''Sonic CD'' (1993), and ''Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles'' (1994). The games are playable in their original format and a new widescreen format that removes lives. ''Origins'' adds additional game modes and missions, which allow players to unlock content in an in-game museum. ''Origins'' was conceived following the release of the 2020 ''Sonic'' film; due to the influx of new fans, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka wanted to make the older ''Sonic'' games available on modern hardware. It was primarily developed at Sega, though Simon Thomley, who worked on ''Sonic Mania'' (2017), developed the remaster of ''Sonic 3 & Knuckles''. A portion of the ''Sonic 3'' soundtrack was replaced with rearrangements by Jun Senoue, f ...

Retro Engine
The Retro Engine is a multiplatform game engine developed by Australian programmer Christian Whitehead, best known for its use in Sega's ''Sonic the Hedgehog'' series. Overview Unlike most modern game engines, the Retro Engine is primarily tailored for creating two-dimensional games like those released for 32-bit or below-era consoles, such as the Sega Saturn, Sega Genesis or the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. For this reason, the engine focuses more on raster graphics and palette manipulation, although it does feature support for widescreen graphics and online functionality. History Australian programmer Christian Whitehead created the Retro Engine for use with a 2007 fangame entitled ''Retro Sonic'', which is based upon the original ''Sonic'' games released for the Sega Genesis. The game became notable after its release for its accuracy to the games, despite not being a ROM hack or modification to an existing ''Sonic'' game. ''Retro Sonic'' later merged with two other ' ...

Christian Whitehead
Christian Whitehead, also known by his alias The Taxman, is an Australian video game programmer and designer. He is most recognized for his work creating updated ports of early games in Sega's ''Sonic the Hedgehog'' series, as well as being the lead developer of an original game in the series, ''Sonic Mania''. He has also developed multiple remakes of classic ''Sonic'' games and most recently, the remasters in ''Sonic Origins''. Career In 2006, Whitehead worked as a freelance 3D animator with the company Kine Graffiti. Since 2009, he has focused on game development, developing various fangames based on the ''Sonic the Hedgehog'' series. In 2009, Whitehead produced a "proof-of-concept" video of ''Sonic CD'' running on an iPhone using his own custom engine, the "Retro Engine". Sonic Gems Collection
''Sonic Gems Collection'' is a 2005 compilation of Sega video games, primarily those in the ''Sonic the Hedgehog'' series. The emulated games span multiple genres and consoles—from the Sega Genesis to the Sega Saturn—and retain the features and errors of their initial releases with minimal edits. Player progress is rewarded with demos of other ''Sonic'' games, videos, and promotional artwork spanning the history of the ''Sonic'' franchise. While its 2002 predecessor, '' Sonic Mega Collection'', comprised the more popular ''Sonic'' games, ''Gems Collection'' focuses on more obscure games, such as ''Sonic CD'' and ''Sonic the Fighters''. Other non-''Sonic'' games are included, but some, such as the ''Streets of Rage'' trilogy, are omitted in the Western localization. Developer Sonic Team conceived the compilation to introduce younger players to older ''Sonic'' games. One game they wished to include, ''SegaSonic the Hedgehog'', was excluded due to emulation difficulties. Se ...

Metal Sonic
The ''Sonic the Hedgehog'' video game franchise began in 1991 with the game ''Sonic the Hedgehog'' for the Sega Genesis, which pitted a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog named Sonic against a rotund male human villain named Doctor Eggman (or Doctor Ivo Robotnik). The sequel, ''Sonic 2'', gave Sonic a fox friend named Tails. ''Sonic CD'' introduced Amy Rose, a female hedgehog with a persistent crush on Sonic. ''Sonic 3'' introduced Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic's rival and, later, friend. All five of these have remained major characters and appeared in dozens of games. The series has introduced dozens of additional recurring characters over the years. These have ranged from anthropomorphic animal characters like Shadow the Hedgehog and Cream the Rabbit to robots created by Eggman like Metal Sonic and E-123 Omega, as well as human characters like Eggman's grandfather Gerald Robotnik. The series features three fictional species: Chao, which have usually functioned as digital pets and ...

Porting
In software engineering, porting is the process of adapting software for the purpose of achieving some form of execution in a computing environment that is different from the one that a given program (meant for such execution) was originally designed for (e.g., different CPU, operating system, or third party library). The term is also used when software/hardware is changed to make them usable in different environments. Software is ''portable'' when the cost of porting it to a new platform is significantly less than the cost of writing it from scratch. The lower the cost of porting software relative to its implementation cost, the more portable it is said to be. Etymology The term "port" is derived from the Latin '' portāre'', meaning "to carry". When code is not compatible with a particular operating system or architecture, the code must be "carried" to the new system. The term is not generally applied to the process of adapting software to run with less memory on the sam ...

Time Travel
Time travel is the concept of movement between certain points in time, analogous to movement between different points in space by an object or a person, typically with the use of a hypothetical device known as a time machine. Time travel is a widely recognized concept in philosophy and fiction, particularly science fiction. The idea of a time machine was popularized by H. G. Wells' 1895 novel ''The Time Machine''. It is uncertain if time travel to the past is physically possible, and such travel, if at all feasible, may give rise to questions of causality. Forward time travel, outside the usual sense of the perception of time, is an extensively observed phenomenon and well-understood within the framework of special relativity and general relativity. However, making one body advance or delay more than a few milliseconds compared to another body is not feasible with current technology. As for backward time travel, it is possible to find solutions in general relativity that allow ...
