Sonia Sekula
Sonja Sekula (8 April 1918 – 25 April 1963) (also known as Sonia Sekula) was an American artist linked with the abstract expressionist movement, notable for her activity as an "out" lesbian in the New York art world during the 1940s and early 1950s. She met the surrealists in exile in New York during 1942. On 25 April 1963 she hanged herself in her studio in Zurich after many years of mental health issues. She is buried in St. Moritz as she had requested in a letter to her mother. Early life and education Sonja Sekula was born in Lucerne on 8 April 1918 to a Swiss mother, Berta Huguenin (1896–1980), and a Hungarian father, Béla Sekula (1881–1966), a philatelist. Sekula and her family relocated to New York from Lucerne, Switzerland when she was a child. She lived in New York, New Mexico, Mexico, and in different cities in Europe. Annemarie Von Matt
Annemarie von Matt (born Marie Gunz: 10 April 1905 – 27 November 1967) was a Swiss painter, graphic artist and writer. Life Marie Gunz was born in Root, a Catholic village to the north of Luzern, along the road towards Zürich. Konstantin Gunz, her father, was a train driver. The third of her parents' seven recorded children, she was described during her school years as "a wild girl who loved to draw". She received not quite seven years of schooling, which was normal for her class at this time, and then took a series of jobs in domestic service, both as a nanny and as a housemaid. There was no question of higher education: she is identified in some sources as a "self-taught artist". That does not tell the full story, however. She was ambitious and strikingly beautiful. As a young women she took studio work as a nude model which gave her a connection to the dynamic artistic network in central Switzerland in the 1920s. Katonah Museum Of Art
The Katonah Museum of Art is a non-collecting institution geared towards visual arts, located in Katonah, New York, Katonah, New York (state), New York. It does not have a permanent collection, but holds temporary exhibitions. The museum was founded in 1953, in one room at the local library. In 1990 it moved to a separate building, designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes. The cost of the new building was $5.3 million. In 1993 The New York Times said that the museum had 50,000 visitors a year.
