Song To The Siren (The Chemical Brothers Song)
"Song to the Siren" is the first Chemical Brothers single released under the name The Dust Brothers. It was originally released under the "green label" for Diamond Records and was later released under the Junior Boys Own label. The song uses a sample of This Mortal Coil's version of Tim Buckley's "Song to the Siren" and a reversed voice sample from the Dead Can Dance's song "Song of Sophia" from their album '' The Serpent's Egg''. The Chemical Brothers, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons, started to DJ in 1992 playing hip hop, techno, and house. Rowlands and Simons called themselves The Dust Brothers, after the US production duo famous for their work with the Beastie Boys. The Chemical Brothers are an English electronic music duo formed by Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons in Manchester in 1989. Junior Boy's Own is an English record label specialising in electronic dance music. Underworld, The Chemical Brothers and X-Press 2 are its most successful artists. History The origins of the label go back to 1987, when a group of young clubbers started a fanzine named ''Boys Own'', inspired by a similar fanzine for Liverpool football fans called ''The End'', edited by future singer of The Farm, Peter Hooton. This Mortal Coil
This Mortal Coil were a British music collective led by Ivo Watts-Russell, founder of the British record label 4AD. Although Watts-Russell and John Fryer were the only two official members, the band's recorded output featured a large rotating cast of supporting artists, many of whom were otherwise associated with 4AD, including members of Cocteau Twins, Pixies and Dead Can Dance. The project became known for its gothic, dream pop sound, and released three full albums, beginning in 1984 with ''It'll End in Tears''. Background Watts-Russell had founded 4AD in 1980, and the label established itself as one of the key labels in the British post-punk movement. "Song to the Siren" is a song written by Tim Buckley to a poem by his writing partner Larry Beckett, released by Buckley on his 1970 album '' Starsailor''. It was also later released on '' Morning Glory: The Tim Buckley Anthology'', the album featuring a performance of the song taken from the final episode of ''The Monkees'' TV show which aired on March 25, 1968. Pat Boone was the first to release a recording of the song when it was featured on his 1969 album ''Departure'', predating Buckley's album. However, the song has become perhaps Buckley's most famous due to a number of artists covering the song after his death in 1975, notably the British ensemble This Mortal Coil in 1983. Dead Can Dance are an Australian music duo first established in Melbourne. Currently composed of Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry, the group formed in 1981. They relocated to London the following year. ''The Serpent's Egg'' is the fourth studio album by the Australian band Dead Can Dance, released on 24 October 1988 by record label 4AD. Background The album was the last produced while Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard were a romantic couple. A majority of the album was recorded in a multi-storey apartment block in the Isle of Dogs, London. Perry discussed the album's title: "In a lot of aerial photographs of the Earth, if you look upon it as a giant organism—a macrocosmos—you can see that the nature of the life force, water, travels in a serpentine way".
