Solon McDade
Solon McDade (born March 1974 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a Canadian musician and composer. Career He began playing the cello at age four. By the time he was nine, he was playing double bass, washtub bass, and violin in the McDade Family Band. In his teens he performed at various Canadian folk festivals, the Commonwealth Games, and for the British royal family. He attended MacEwan University and studied jazz at McGill University where he received his Master's Degree in 2017. While a student, he toured with Bill Bourne, Maria Dunn, and his sister Shannon Johnson. He has received nominations by the Juno Awards and Aria Awards. He has worked with Luther Johnson, Billy Boy Arnold, Wildchild Butler, Michael Coleman, Susie Arioli and Jordan Officer. The McDades were performers at an early age, playing folk music with their parents, Terry and Danielle McDade, in the McDade Family Band from 1974–1994. The siblings performed at the Canadian National Exhibition, the Commonwealth Games, and for the British Royal Family. They formed the McDades in 2000. Maria Dunn (musician)
Maria Dunn is a Juno-winning Canadian songwriter and musician. She has been described as "an arrestingly powerful singer-songwriter who writes great historical and social commentary." A storyteller through song, her music blends Celtic folk with North American bluegrass and country influences. Early life Born in Scotland, she moved as a child with her family to Ontario. She has made Edmonton, Alberta her base since the 1990s. As a child she studied classical piano and sang in several community choirs. She later studied psychology at the University of Alberta. From 1987 to 2000, she hosted a weekly folk music program on the U of A's campus/community radio, CJSR. Immersing herself in folk music in this way, she gravitated towards writing her own songs. Jeremiah McDade
Jeremiah McDade is a Canadian folk musician. Career McDade was a performer when he was five years old. With his parents, Terry and Danielle, brother, Solon and sister, Shannon Johnson he played in the McDade family band and performed a variety of shows in Canada. They have also performed for the British royal family. Jeremiah McDade is a graduate of McGill University and MacEwan University. Jeremiah McDade received a distinguished alumni award from MacEwan University, where he studied jazz. He, his brother Solon, and sister Shannon formed the McDades in 2000. Their second album, ''Bloom'', received the Juno Award for best roots/traditional album by a group, an Independent Music Award, and two Canadian Folk Music Awards. Jordan Officer
Jordan Officer (born 1976) is a Canadian guitarist who plays jazz, blues, and country music. He has worked often with singer Susie Arioli. Officer was born in Montreal. He played violin and drums before taking up guitar at the age of fourteen. He performed with blues bands in clubs, which is how he met Susie Arioli, a Canadian jazz singer who also plays snare drum. Washtub Bass
The washtub bass, or gutbucket, is a stringed instrument used in American folk music that uses a metal washtub as a resonator. Although it is possible for a washtub bass to have four or more strings and tuning pegs, traditional washtub basses have a single string whose pitch is adjusted by pushing or pulling on a staff or stick to change the tension. The washtub bass was used in jug bands that were popular in some African American communities in the early 1900s. In the 1950s, British skiffle bands used a variant called a tea chest bass, and during the 1960s, US folk musicians used the washtub bass in jug band-influenced music.
