Solomon Temple (Grand Canyon)
Solomon Temple is a summit located in the Grand Canyon, in Coconino County of northern Arizona, USA. It is situated four miles north of Moran Point, 3.5 miles east of Newberry Butte, and 1.5 mile southeast of Rama Shrine, its nearest higher neighbor. Topographic relief is significant as it rises above the Colorado River in less than one mile. Solomon Temple was named after historical king Solomon by geologist François E. Matthes, following Clarence Dutton's practice of naming geographical features in the Grand Canyon after mythological deities and heroic figures. This feature's name was officially adopted in 1906 by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. Solomon Temple is a butte composed of Mississippian Redwall Limestone, which overlays shale of the Cambrian Tonto Group. Rama Shrine is a -elevation platform-summit located in the eastern Grand Canyon, in Coconino County, Arizona, Coconino County of northern Arizona, Southwestern United States, United States. Clarence Dutton
Clarence Edward Dutton (May 15, 1841 – January 4, 1912) was an American geologist and US Army officer. Dutton was born in Wallingford, Connecticut on May 15, 1841. He graduated from Yale College in 1860 and took postgraduate courses there until 1862, when he enlisted in the 21st Connecticut Volunteer Infantry; he fought at Fredericksburg, Suffolk, Nashville and Petersburg. He was elected as a member to the American Philosophical Society in 1871. In 1875, he began work as a geologist for John Wesley Powell and, after 1879, for the U.S. Geological Survey. Working chiefly in the Colorado Plateau region, he wrote several classic papers, including geological studies of the high plateaus of Utah (1879–80), the Cenozoic history of the Grand Canyon district (1882), and the Charleston, South Carolina, earthquake of 1886. Harvey Butchart
John Harvey Butchart (May 10, 1907 – May 29, 2002) was a mathematics professor who was well known for his hiking exploits in and around the Grand Canyon in Arizona, United States. Beginning in 1945, Butchart explored the Grand Canyon's backcountry on foot. He wrote extensively about his adventures and influenced generations of canyoneers. Sparse human communities have lived, worked, and traveled in the harsh and beautiful Canyon terrain at least since the Ancestral Puebloans. Dox Formation
The Dox Formation, also known as the Dox Sandstone, is a Mesoproterozoic rock formation that outcrops in the eastern Grand Canyon, Coconino County, Arizona. The strata of the Dox Formation, except for some more resistant sandstone beds, are relatively susceptible to erosion and weathering. The lower member of the Dox Formation consists of silty-sandstone and sandstone, and some interbedded argillaceous beds, that form stair-stepped, cliff-slope topography. The Tonto Group is a name for an assemblage of related sedimentary strata, collectively known by geologists as a ''Group'', that comprises the basal sequence Paleozoic strata exposed in the sides of the Grand Canyon. Cambrian
The Cambrian Period ( ; sometimes symbolized C with bar, Ꞓ) was the first geological period of the Paleozoic Era, and of the Phanerozoic Eon.
