Soft Power (musical)
''Soft Power'' is a musical (also referred to by its authors as a "play with a musical") with book and lyrics by David Henry Hwang and music and additional lyrics by Jeanine Tesori. ''Soft Power'' was intended as a "reverse ''The King And I''". Instead of exoticizing an Asian country, ''Soft Power'' exoticizes America by looking at it from a hypothetical future Chinese musical. It also serves as a quasi-sequel to Hwang's 2007 play '' Yellow Face'', featuring the same DHH character who appeared in said play. Performances It began performances at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles in May 2018 and at San Francisco's Curran Theatre in June. The musical began performances off-Broadway at The Public Theater on September 14, 2019, directed by Leigh Silverman, and closed on November 17, 2019. Jeanine Tesori
Jeanine Tesori (known earlier in her career as Jeanine Levenson) is an American composer and musical arranger best known for her work in the theater. She is the most prolific and honored female theatrical composer in history, with five Broadway musicals and five Tony Award nominations. She won the 1999 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music in a Play for Nicholas Hytner's production of ''Twelfth Night'' at Lincoln Center, the 2004 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music for ''Caroline, or Change'', and the 2015 Tony Award for Best Original Score for ''Fun Home'' (shared with Lisa Kron), making them the first female writing team to win that award. She was named a Pulitzer Prize for Drama finalist twice for ''Fun Home'' and ''Soft Power.'' Whiteface (performance)
Whiteface is a type of performance in which a person wears theatrical makeup in order to make themselves look like a white person. The term is a reversal of the form of performance known as blackface, in which makeup was used by a performer to make themselves look like a black person, usually to portray a stereotype. Whiteface performances originated in the 19th century, and today still occasionally appear in films. Modern usages of whiteface can be contrasted with blackface in contemporary art. Clint Ramos is a Filipino-American costume and set designer for stage and screen. For his work on the 2016 Broadway production of ''Eclipsed,'' Ramos became the first person of color to win the Tony Award for Best Costume Design in a Play. Sam Pinkleton
Sam Pinkleton is an American theatre choreographer and director. He is best known for choreographing the Broadway musical '' Natasha, Pierre, & the Great Comet of 1812'', for which he received a Tony Award nomination. Pinkleton's additional work on Broadway includes choreographing the 2017 productions of ''Amélie'' and ''Significant Other.'' Life and career Sam Pinkleton was born on July 20, 1987, in a small town named Hopewell, right outside of Richmond, Virginia. As a child he attended Carter G. Woodson Middle School. The Lucille Lortel Awards recognize excellence in New York Off-Broadway theatre. The Awards are named for Lucille Lortel, an actress and theater producer, and have been awarded since 1986.
