''Soft Money'' is the second studio album by American hip hop artist Jel. It was released on Anticon on February 20, 2006. "WMD / All Around" was released as a single from the album. Critical reception At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, ''Soft Money'' received an average score of 67% based on 14 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews." Brian Howe of ''Pitchfork'' gave the album a 6.0 out of 10, describing it as "a murky palimpsest of disembodied samples and dirty beats, incantatory rhymes and live instrumentation, leftist rhetoric and absurdist non sequiturs, breathy female vocals and ephemeral melodies". Martin Longley of BBC said: "There are few dynamic surprises here, and no serrated edges, but this disc's strength lies in its building mass of lumbering, decelerated funk, its textures gluey and thick." Jel (rapper)
Jeffrey James Logan (born May 7, 1978), better known by his stage name Jel, is an American hip hop producer and rapper. He is co-founder of the record label Anticon. He has been a member of Presage, Themselves, Subtle, and 13 & God. Biography Jel released his first solo album, '' 10 Seconds'', on Mush Records in 2002. The album is titled after the limited sampling time of E-mu SP-1200. It features contributions from Dax Pierson, Odd Nosdam, Doseone, and Alias. His second solo album, ''Soft Money'', was released on Anticon in 2006. The album features contributions from Dosh, Wise Intelligent of Poor Righteous Teachers, and Stefanie Böhm of Ms. John Soda, among others. ''XLR8R'' (pronounced "accelerator") is a website that covers music, culture, style, and technology. It was originally also a print magazine. History and profile ''XLR8R'' was founded as a newsprint zine in 1993 by publisher Andrew Smith in Seattle. It has offices in San Francisco and New York City. Adam Drucker (born April 21, 1977), better known by his stage name Doseone, is an American rapper, producer, poet and artist. He is a co-founder of the indie hip hop record label Anticon. He has also been a member of numerous groups including Deep Puddle Dynamics, Greenthink, Clouddead, Themselves, Subtle, 13 & God, Go Dark, Nevermen, and A7pha. History Doseone is known for his extensive collaborations with other Anticon members, forming numerous groups and performing guest spots on others' releases. James Brandon Best, better known by his stage name Pedestrian, is a rapper and writer from Los Angeles. He is a co-founder of Anticon. He is also known as a preacher under the moniker Evangelist J.B. Best. History In 1998, Pedestian co-founded Anticon with other indie hip hop artists. He came up with the name; it means "anti conformity" originally, but also means "ant icon." He has written several articles about hip hop for ''East Bay Express'' from 2003 to 2004. Alexander Kort
Subtle was an alternative hip hop sextet from Oakland, California. It consisted of Adam Drucker (Doseone), Jeffrey Logan ( Jel), Dax Pierson, Jordan Dalrymple, Alexander Kort, and Marty Dowers. The band was formed in 2001. While considered by the artists to be "genreless", Subtle had close ties to the hip hop and indie music scene. Although both Doseone and Jel are members of Anticon collective, Subtle was not on the Anticon label roster. Subtle was signed to Lex Records. Martin Chavez Dosh (born September 6, 1972), better known mononymously as Dosh, is a multi-instrumentalist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Style Dosh is principally a percussionist who usually adds a Rhodes piano to his kit and uses other electronic devices such as samplers and looping pedals. He has been characterized as experimental/electronica due to his use of signal-altering devices in performance to allow him to create live solo performances using keyboards, tuned percussion, and drums. Dosh often collaborates with other musicians in recordings and live performances, both as leader and in support. Dosh is also known for the incorporation of his family life into his work. Fog is an American indie rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota, formed in 1999. The band is fronted by Andrew Broder, and for a time included Mark Erickson and Tim Glenn. Jonathan Avram "Yoni" Wolf (born April 30, 1979) is an American alternative hip hop and indie rock musician and co-founder of the record label Anticon. From 1997 until 2004, Wolf released music under the stage name Why?. In 2004 he transferred that name onto his newly founded band. Thereafter he has been credited for his solo work as Yoni Wolf.
