Sofro Restaurant Corporation
The Sofro Restaurant Corporation was a 1930s Manhattan business, which had offices at 51 Chambers Street. The business was incorporated in September 1931 with Max Rosoff as president. Dedication of founder Rosoff was a famous New York City restaurateur who founded Rosoff's Restaurant and Rosoff's Hotel, both located at 147 West 43rd Street, near Times Square. He came to the United States from Russia as an orphan at the age of twelve. He began his career as a druggist's helper and then became a salami slicer at an East Side delicatessen, sleeping on a cot in the store to save money. He opened his first restaurant on Graham Avenue in Brooklyn at the age of nineteen. In 1905 he moved his establishment to 6th Avenue, opposite the Hippodrome Theatre. He moved again in 1918 to a site formerly occupied by the Metropole Hotel. Rosoff died of a stroke in Great Neck, New York on May 6, 1962. Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank Building
49 Chambers, formerly known as the Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank Building and 51 Chambers Street, is a residential building at 49–51 Chambers Street in the Civic Center neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. It was built between 1909 and 1912 and was designed by Raymond F. Almirall in the Beaux-Arts style. The building occupies a slightly irregular lot bounded by Chambers Street to the south, Elk Street to the east, and Reade Street to the north. 49 Chambers was the largest bank building in the United States upon its completion. It was the first skyscraper to use the "H" layout, which provided light and air to more parts of the building. East Side (Manhattan)
The East Side of Manhattan refers to the side of Manhattan which abuts the East River and faces Brooklyn and Queens. Fifth Avenue, Central Park from 59th to 110th Streets, and Broadway below 8th Street separate it from the West Side. The major neighborhoods on the East Side include (from north to south) East Harlem, Yorkville, the Upper East Side, Turtle Bay, Murray Hill, Kips Bay, Gramercy, East Village, and the Lower East Side. Hippodrome Theatre
The Hippodrome Theatre, also called the New York Hippodrome, was a theater in New York City from 1905 to 1939, located on Sixth Avenue between West 43rd and West 44th Streets in the Theater District of Midtown Manhattan. It was called the world's largest theatre by its builders and had a seating capacity of 5,300,Shanor with a 100x200ft (30x61m) stage. The theatre had state-of-the-art theatrical technology, including a rising glass water tank.
