Sodankylä
Sodankylä (; sme, Soađegilli ; smn, Suáđigil; sms, Suäʹđjel) is a municipality of Finland. It is located in the region of Lapland, and lies at the northern end of Highway 5 ( E63) and along Highway 4 ( E75). The Kitinen River flows near the center of Sodankylä. Its neighbouring municipalities are Inari, Kemijärvi, Kittilä, Pelkosenniemi, Rovaniemi, and Savukoski. The municipality has two official languages: Finnish and Northern Sami. The municipality has a population of , () which makes it the fourth largest municipality in Lapland after Rovaniemi, Tornio and Kemi, and at the same time the largest municipality in population that does not use the title of city or town. Sodankylä Airfield
Sodankylä Airfield ( fi, Sodankylän lentokenttä; ) is an airfield in Sodankylä, Lapland, Finland, located south-east of Sodankylä municipal centre. The airfield was originally built in the early 1940s, initially as a stopover airfield for the flights to Petsamo. A gravel runway was built in 1971. The asphalt pavement and terminal building were completed in 1989, and there were scheduled flights in 1989–1996. There were some plans to build a new, longer runway to enable direct charter flights in the early 2000s. Sodankylä Airport was turned to an uncontrolled airfield on July 1, 2010. Today the airfield serves as a general aviation airfield. Jaeger Brigade
The Jaeger Brigade (''Jääkäriprikaati'') is a unit of the Finnish Army. The unit is located in Sodankylä and Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, some north of the Arctic Circle. EISCAT
EISCAT (European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association) operates three incoherent scatter radar systems in Northern Scandinavia and Svalbard. The facilities are used to study the interaction between the Sun and the Earth as revealed by disturbances in the ionosphere and magnetosphere. The EISCAT Scientific Association exists to provide scientists with access to incoherent scatter radar facilities of the highest technical standard. Pelkosenniemi ( smn, Pelkosnjargâ) is a municipality of Finland. Pelkosenniemi is located in the province of Lapland. The municipality has a population of (), which make it the smallest municipality in Lapland in terms of population. It covers an area of of which is water. The population density is . European Route E75
European route E 75 is part of the International E-road network, which is a series of main roads in Europe. The E 75 starts at the town of Vardø in Norway by the Barents Sea and it runs south through Finland, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Greece. The road ends after about (not counting ferries) at the town of Sitia on eastern end of the island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea, it being the most southerly point reached by an E-road. (The northernmost one is E69) From the beginning of the 1990s until 2009, there was no ferry connection between Helsinki and Gdańsk. However, Finnlines started a regular service between Helsinki and Gdynia. Kemijärvi
Kemijärvi ( se, Giemajávri, smn, Kiemâjävri, sms, Ǩeeʹmmjäuʹrr) is a town and municipality of Finland. It is located in the province of Lapland. History The first permanent settler inhabitant of Kemijärvi was Paavali Ollinpoika Halonen, who moved from the region of Oulu, from Niskakylä, Utajärvi to Kemijärvi about 1580. His wife was Anna Laurintytär Halonen, and their children were Paavo, Olli and Pekka Halonen. Paavali's place of residence is known today as Halosenranta. As the first settlers moved to Kemijärvi, the area was no longer inhabited exclusively by the Sami people, but Ämmänvaara in the area of the municipality is an ancient sacrificial place of Samis. The railway reached Kemijärvi in 1934. It was extended north to Salla and what is now Russia during World War II, though the line is currently moribund beyond Kemijärvi.
