Society Hill is an unincorporated community in Macon County, Alabama, United States. History The community is likely named after Society Hill, South Carolina. Society Hill was once home to the Society Hill High School. A post office operated under the name Society Hill from 1837 to 1914. James Torbert served as the first postmaster of Society Hill. Torbert's grandson, Clement Clay Torbert, was born in Society Hill but moved to Opelika to operate a store and bank. Clement Clay's grandson, C. C. Macon County, Alabama
Macon County is a county located in the east central part of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census, the population was 19,532. Its county seat is Tuskegee. Its name is in honor of Nathaniel Macon, a member of the United States Senate from North Carolina. Developed for cotton plantation agriculture in the nineteenth century, the county is considered within the Black Belt of the South. It has had a majority-black population since before the American Civil War. History For thousands of years, this area was inhabited by varying cultures of indigenous peoples. Area code 334 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for southeastern Alabama. It was created on January 15, 1995, in an area code split from area code 205. and was the first new area code in Alabama since the implementation of area codes in 1947. To permit a transition period for the reconfiguration of equipment, such as computers and fax machines, use of area code 205 continued in the 334 region through May 13, 1995. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. Society Hill, South Carolina
Society Hill is a town in Darlington County, South Carolina, United States alongside the Pee Dee River. It is the oldest community in Darlington County and one of the first towns founded in South Carolina. The town was once the intellectual center of the Pee Dee region. However, the town's fortunes declined in the 19th century after rivers became less important as means of transportation. It is part of the Florence Metropolitan Statistical Area. In the 2010 census, the population of Society Hill was 563, down from 700 in 2000 and 848 in 1980.
