Socialism 2000
Socialism 2000 ( it, Socialismo 2000) was a democratic socialist political association in Italy led by Cesare Salvi. History The group was launched in August 2000 as a left-wing faction within the Democrats of the Left (DS). Socialism 2000 was since then part of the internal left of the party. In 2007 Salvi and his followers chose to leave the DS, as they had refused to merge into the new Democratic Party (PD), and took part to the foundation of Democratic Left (SD). Democratic Socialism
Democratic socialism is a Left-wing politics, left-wing political philosophy that supports political democracy and some form of a socially owned economy, with a particular emphasis on economic democracy, workplace democracy, and workers' self-management within a market socialist economy or an alternative form of a decentralised planned socialist economy. Democratic socialists argue that capitalism is inherently incompatible with the values of freedom, Egalitarianism, equality, and solidarity and that these Ideal (ethics), ideals can only be achieved through the realisation of a socialist society. United Consumers
The United Consumers (''Consumatori Uniti'') was a political party in Italy led by Bruno De Vita. In the 2006 general election the party was affiliated to The Union, the centre-left coalition led by Romano Prodi. The United Consumers contested the election with the Federation of the Greens and the Party of Italian Communists (PdCI) for the Italian Senate in a joint list called Together with the Union, winning 11 seats together. The 2009 European Parliament election in Italy was held on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 June 2009, as decided by the Italian government on 18 December 2008. Italy elected 72 members of the European Parliament (MEPs). Electoral system The party-list proportional representation was the traditional electoral system of the Italian Republic from its establishment in 1946 to 1994, therefore it was also adopted to elect the Italian members of the European Parliament (MEPs) since 1979. Two levels were introduced: a national level to divide the seats among parties and a constituency level to distribute them among candidates in open lists. Five constituencies were established, each including 2–5 regions and each electing a fixed number of MEPs. At national level, seats are divided between party lists using the largest remainder method with Hare quota. Seats are allocated to parties and then to their most voted candidates. Cesare Salvi
Cesare Salvi (born 9 June 1948) is an Italian politician who served as minister of labor and social security. Early life Salvi was born in Lecce on 9 June 1948. Career Salvi was the spokesperson for the secretary of the Democrats of the Left (DS). He was a senator from 1992 to 2008. He was also head of the DS senators. He served as the ''relatore'' (secretary) for one of the four sub-committees (specifically one about the form of government) dealing the future form of the Italian governments under the joint constitutional committee launched during the period of 1997-1998. He was appointed labor minister to the cabinet headed by Prime Minister Giuliano Amato in June 2000. Salvi replaced Antonio Bassolino as labor minister. He was in office until 2001. The Communist Refoundation Party ( it, Partito della Rifondazione Comunista, PRC) is a communist political party in Italy that emerged from a split of the Italian Communist Party (PCI) in 1991. The party's secretary is Maurizio Acerbo, who replaced Paolo Ferrero in 2017. Armando Cossutta was the party's founder, while Fausto Bertinotti its longest-serving leader (1994–2008). The latter transformed the PRC from a traditional communist party into a collection of radical social movements. The PRC is a member of the Party of the European Left (PEL), of which Bertinotti was the inaugural president in 2004.
