Smacksoft
Whang Bo-ryung = Smacksoft ( = Smacksoft), commonly known as Smacksoft, is a South Korean post-punk and experimental rock band formed in 2000 by the lead singer-songwriter Whang Bo-ryung. The band is prominent in the local indie scene in Hongdae, Seoul where front woman Whang is known as one of the most respected female rockers. Two of their albums were nominated for Best Modern Rock Album at the Korean Music Awards: ''Shines in the Dark'' in 2010 and ''Follow Your Heart'' in 2013. Whang Bo-ryung (; born February 26, 1970) is a South Korean-American singer, songwriter and painter. She is the lead vocalist and founder of the band Smacksoft. She released her first solo album, ''Cat With Three Ears'', in April 1998. Life and career 1970–97: Early life in Seoul, move to New York Whang was born in Seoul and relocated to Busan in the fifth grade of elementary school. In 1985, at age fifteen, she moved to the United States with her family. During her sophomore year in high school, she received an acoustic guitar as a birthday gift and started playing and writing music in her diary. She graduated from Rush–Henrietta Senior High School, and began college at the Pratt Institute in art studies. She and a male college friend formed the duo Sun & Fish and started busking on the streets of New York City. Seoulsonic (SEOULSONIC), ( ko, 서울소닉) is an annual concert tour in the United States and Canada, organized by the DFSB Kollective with support from the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), which began in 2011 in an effort to introduce South Korea's indie music culture to the West. The tour includes annual stops at SXSW in Austin, Texas and the Canadian Music Week in Toronto, Canada. History Seoulsonic evolved from a quarterly concert series, hosted by the DFSB Kollective in South Korea, into an international tour with the goal of assisting Korean indie bands, in particular "alt- rok" bands, to build an international audience for success beyond Hongdae. Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival () is a rock festival which is held annually in Incheon, South Korea for three days in August. Launched in 2006, it is considered one of the biggest live music events in South Korea. The festival covers various genres, but mainly rock and electronic music. The name came from the five main themes of the festival: music, passion, environment friendly, DIY, and friendship. South by Southwest, abbreviated as SXSW and colloquially referred to as South By, is an annual conglomeration of parallel film, interactive media, and music festivals and conferences organized jointly that take place in mid-March in Austin, Texas, United States. It began in 1987 and has continued to grow in both scope and size every year. In 2017, the conference lasted for 10 days with the interactive track lasting for five days, music for seven days, and film for nine days. Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS) () is one of the leading South Korean television and radio broadcasters. Jambinai () are a Korean avant-rock band formed in Seoul in 2009. Their debut album ''Différance'' won the award for Best Crossover Album at the 2013 Korean Music Awards. Their second album ''Hermitage'' was released in 2016 on Bella Union. During the 2018 Winter Olympics closing ceremony in Pyeongchang, Jambinai performed with an orchestra of geomungo players.
