Slumberland Records is an American independent record label, formed in 1989 in Washington, D.C. and based in Oakland, California. The label has released recordings by Velocity Girl, Honeybunch, Lilys, Stereolab, Evans The Death, St. Christopher, Boyracer, Beatnik Filmstars, 14 Iced Bears, and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. History Inspired by independent punk labels such as K Records, Slumberland was created as a collective effort consisting of members of D.C. area bands Velocity Girl and Big Jesus Trash Can as a mecca for indie pop bands, seldom heard outside of the K Records label. The debut Slumberland Records release was "What Kind of Heaven Do You Want?", a shared 7" featuring early line-ups of Velocity Girl, Black Tambourine, and Powderburns. Indie Pop
Indie pop (also typeset as indie-pop or indiepop) is a music genre and subculture that combines guitar pop with DIY ethic in opposition to the style and tone of mainstream pop music. It originated from British post-punk in the late 1970s and subsequently generated a thriving fanzine, Independent record label, label, and club and gig circuit. Compared to its counterpart, indie rock, the genre is more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively angst-free. In later years, the definition of ''indie pop'' has bifurcated to also mean bands from unrelated DIY scenes/movements with pop leanings. Subgenres include chamber pop and twee pop. The Aislers Set
The Aislers Set is an American indie pop band that formed in San Francisco in 1997, after the breakup of chief songwriter Amy Linton's former band Henry's Dress. The Aislers Set's music is influenced by C86-style British indie pop. The founding members were Linton (guitar, vocals, multi instrumentalist), Wyatt Cusick (guitar, vocals, multi instrumentalist), Alicia Vanden Heuvel, (bass, vocals, piano, multi instrumentalist), Yoshi Nakamoto (drums), & Jen Cohen (organ). Parasites are an American pop-punk band. They were formed in the late 1980s by guitarist / singer Dave Parasite and bassist Ron Nole in New Jersey. The Earthmen were an Australian indie pop-rock band formed in Melbourne, Victoria. They released two albums, ''Teen Sensations'' and ''Love Walked In'' during their career (1991–1999). Linda Smith is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and home recording artist who began self-releasing cassette albums in the late 1980s. Beginning in the 1990s, some of her recordings were released in vinyl and CD form on indie labels such as Slumberland Records and Harriet Records. In 2021, the Captured Tracks label reissued a selection of her recordings on an album called ''Till Another Time: 1988–1996''. ''Paste Magazine'' described the release as a "hidden treasure of America’s pop underground." In the 1980s, prior to her solo career, Smith was in a New York City band called the Woods. Swirlies is an American indie rock band formed in Boston in 1990. Small Factory
Small Factory was an American indie rock band formed in 1991 and based in Providence, Rhode Island, United States. The group was well regarded as an exemplar of 1990s indie rock although they never achieved great success or influence. Especially noted for the exuberance and charming banter of their live shows. The band broke up in 1995, and Dave Auchenbach formed Flora Street, while the other two members continued working together as The Godrays. Lorelei
The Lorelei ( ; ), spelled Loreley in German, is a , steep slate rock on the right bank of the River Rhine in the Rhine Gorge (or Middle Rhine) at Sankt Goarshausen in Germany, part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 1930s Loreley Amphitheatre is on top of the rock. Etymology The name comes from the old German words , Rhine dialect for "murmuring", and the Celtic term "rock". The translation of the name would therefore be "murmur rock" or "murmuring rock". The heavy currents, and a small waterfall in the area (still visible in the early 19th century) created a murmuring sound, and this combined with the special echo the rock produces to act as a sort of amplifier, giving the rock its name. The murmuring is hard to hear today owing to the urbanization of the area.
