Small Factory
Small Factory was an American indie rock band formed in 1991 and based in Providence, Rhode Island, United States. The group was well regarded as an exemplar of 1990s indie rock although they never achieved great success or influence. Especially noted for the exuberance and charming banter of their live shows. The band broke up in 1995, and Dave Auchenbach formed Flora Street, while the other two members continued working together as The Godrays. Phoebe Summersquash later voiced a character on the TV series Downtown (1999 TV series), Downtown, and in 2005 appeared in Sarah Silverman's film "Jesus Is Magic." Alex Kemp moved to Chicago and formed the band Assassins with Joe Cassidy, Aaron Miller, Merritt Lear and David Golitko. After signing with the major label Arista, the album was subsequently never released as the label's president L.A. Reid was fired and the holding company, BMG, briefly closed the company. Providence, Rhode Island
Providence is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Rhode Island. One of the oldest cities in New England, it was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, a Reformed Baptist theologian and religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He named the area in honor of "God's merciful Providence" which he believed was responsible for revealing such a haven for him and his followers. The city developed as a busy port as it is situated at the mouth of the Providence River in Providence County, at the head of Narragansett Bay. Working Holiday!
''Working Holiday!'' is a compilation album released on the Simple Machines label in 1994. It is a collection of tracks by American indie bands which were originally released on a series of 12 7" singles by Simple Machines as part of the Working Holiday monthly record club starting from December 1992. Each song was intended to commemorate a holiday in the month it was released. Subscribers to the record club were also sent a calendar showing the holidays, and a specially made 7" single carrying box. A limited edition of the ''Working Holiday!'' album contained a second disc of live performances from a three-day live music festival held in January 1994 at The Black Cat in Washington D.C. to celebrate the completion of the Working Holiday series. The 20-page CD booklet issued with all editions of the album contains a detailed and illustrated account of the record club project and the live music festival. Simple Machines
A simple machine is a mechanical device that changes the direction or magnitude of a force. In general, they can be defined as the simplest mechanisms that use mechanical advantage (also called leverage) to multiply force. Vernon Yard
Vernon Yard Recordings was an independent label owned by Virgin Records. Vernon Yard is a small mews off the Portobello Road in Notting Hill. Although Virgin owned a controlling interest in the label, they let Vernon Yard operate as a traditional indie (much like Virgin's relationship with Caroline Records), and therefore very few Vernon Yard releases were distributed by Virgin. In fact, Vernon Yard used many different distributors throughout its run, primarily the aforementioned Caroline, but also competing major label Capitol Records and other willing distributors. The label had a strong relationship with Virgin's British indie, Hut Records, importing Hut bands into the US, and sending Vernon Yard-signed acts over to the UK for release on Hut.
