Slough Stadium
Slough Stadium originally known as the Dolphin Stadium was a greyhound racing stadium in Uxbridge Road, Slough, Berkshire. Origins and opening George Bennett Sr. a resident and entrepreneur of Slough bought and sold a cinema in Chalvey before purchasing the Dolphin Hotel in Slough in May 1914. The hotel was next door to the Dolphin ground which had hosted cricket, bowls and football in the nineteenth century. Slough Town AFC took over the ground in 1890 and Bennett became their owner. Bennett decided that the ground required more activity and after watching the new sport of greyhound racing he made the decision to construct a greyhound track around the pitch. Work got underway in 1928 with the stadium taking shape on the east side of the Uxbridge Road and south of the Dolphin Hotel. Slough () is a town and unparished area in the unitary authority of the same name in Berkshire, England, bordering west London. Dedworth
Dedworth is the most westerly area of Windsor in Berkshire, England. History The name Dedworth is formed from the words 'Dydda', a man's name, and 'Worth', a Saxon word for enclosure. An irregular quadrangula moat in Wolf Lane may be all that remains of the manor house of Dedworth Maunsell. The other manor in the area was Dedworth Loring, owned by the De Loring family from the time of Peter De Loring, in the early 13th century. It was possibly located to the north, where a large medieval hearth has been uncovered in the aptly named Knight's Close. The Greyhound Trainer of the Year or Champion Trainer is an award for the leading greyhound trainer in the United Kingdom. The Edinburgh Cup was a greyhound racing competition held annually at Powderhall Stadium in Powderhall, Scotland. It was inaugurated in 1933 and was considered one of the major competitions in the greyhound calendar. In Scotland only the Scottish Greyhound Derby was held in higher esteem. Pall Mall Stakes
The Pall Mall Stakes was a prestigious greyhound racing competition held at Oxford Stadium until it closed in 2012. It was run at Harringay Stadium from 1935 until 1987, before moving to Oxford Stadium in 1988. The race never received the status of a classic race in but was classified as a category one race. Laurels (greyhounds)
The Laurels is an original classic greyhound competition held at Perry Barr Stadium. It was run at Wimbledon Stadium from 1930 until 1997. It then moved to Belle Vue Stadium in 1998 and remained there until 2017 when it switched to Newcastle Stadium. After two years at Newcastle and a cancellation in 2020 due to COVID-19 it switched to Perry Barr in 2021. competition lost its Category 1 status but was still regarded as one of the most valuable prizes during the racing year. The Arena Racing Company gained the prestigious competition in 2017 from the GRA and it returned to Category 1 status in 2022. Ted Dickson (greyhound Trainer)
Edward Brown 'Ted' Dickson (1923-1996) was a United Kingdom greyhound trainer. He was the UK champion trainer in 1977. Profile Ted Dickson began his career working as a kennel boy for Norman Chambers at Powderhall Stadium in Edinburgh. In 1960 he took out a private trainers licence before joining Slough Stadium in 1970. Dickson came to prominence in 1973 with a classic finalist when Sunny Gold reached the Laurels final while he was a trainer at Slough. Four years later he won the Laurels, with Greenfield Fox and Linacre won the English Greyhound Derby Invitation. This culminated with him becoming the Greyhound Trainer of the Year. In 1978 and 1980 he won the Scurry Gold Cup, the only occasions that Slough had won the event. Further success came and he won the Trainers Championship twice in 1978 and 1980 respectively. Scurry Gold Cup
The Scurry Gold Cup is an original classic greyhound competition currently run at Perry Barr Stadium. It was run at Clapton Stadium from 1928 until its closure in 1973. The event moved to Slough Stadium in 1974 which consequently closed in 1986. The third move resulted in Catford Stadium hosting the race from 1987 until yet another closure forced the race to end in 2002. After a two-year wait, a new home was finally found at Perry Barr Stadium until 2009 when the GRA switched the competition to sister track Belle Vue Stadium. With the closure of Belle Vue in 2020 the future of the competition was unknown but the British Greyhound Breeders Forum stepped in to sponsor the race (held at Harlow Stadium for two years) before it returned to Perry Barr in 2021. West Ham Stadium
West Ham Stadium was a stadium that existed between 1928 and 1972 in Custom House, in East London (it was in the County Borough of West Ham, in the county of Essex, at the time of the stadium's construction). The stadium was built in 1928 on Prince Regent Lane, near the site of the present-day Prince Regent DLR station. Reading Stadium (Oxford Road)
Reading Stadium (Oxford Road) was a greyhound racing stadium and short lived speedway venue in Reading. It is not to be confused with Reading Stadium in Bennet Road that opened one year after Oxford Road closed and is located further to the south of Reading. Opening Reading Stadium was situated north-west of the town and was built adjacent to the Great Western Railway and north of Wigmore Lane off the Oxford Road. It opened on Saturday 14 November 1931. The stadium attracted a crowd estimated to be between four and five thousand who came to watch a seven race card produced by Racing Manager Mr J Compton with the first race starting at 7.30pm.
