Slocan, British Columbia
The Village of Slocan is in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The former steamboat landing and ferry terminal is at the mouth of Springer Creek, at the foot of Slocan Lake. The locality, on British Columbia Highway 6, BC Highway 6 is about by road north of Castlegar, British Columbia, Castlegar and by road and ferry south of Revelstoke, British Columbia, Revelstoke. Name origin Slocan ( ) is from Kutenai language, Ktunaxa ''sⱡuqan'', ), or the related ( (Sinixt ''slogan''). The meaning is "to pierce, strike on the head," in the context of spearing salmon. It likely derived from the Okanagan-Colville term. The name has been used officially for several geographical features, such as communities, rivers, lakes, a whirlpool, and mountain. Slocan Valley
The Slocan Valley is a valley in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. Geographical boundaries The Slocan Valley is about long, but its width is undefined. The Valhalla Range provides the steep western boundary and the Slocan Range presents the gradual slopes of the eastern boundary. Squeezed in between, Slocan Lake occupies the north, and Slocan River the south. In the Selkirk Mountains, which were created 200 million years ago during the Jurassic period, the valley forms part of the long Kootenay Arc, comprising sedimentary, volcanic and metamorphic rock. The earliest recorded use of the descriptor Slocan valley was 1891, and capitalized use was 1897. The name is not recognized officially by the BC Geographic Names office. The exact geographic boundaries are ill-defined, being either greater or smaller than the drainages of Slocan Lake and the Slocan River. Slocan Park, British Columbia
Slocan Park is an unincorporated community on the east side of the Slocan River in the West Kootenay region of southern British Columbia. The neighbourhood on Highway 6 is about north of Crescent Valley and south of Slocan. Adjacent communities From north to south, Park, Koch, and Whiteley & Murray sidings were in close proximity on the former Slocan branch of the Columbia and Kootenay Railway (part of the Canadian Pacific Railway). In 1901, Park siding became Gutelius siding. However, the post office that opened near Whiteley & Murray siding in 1903 was named Gutelius. Initially unchanged, the siding was named after John Murray and his mining partner Bill Whiteley. In 1907, a real estate development near this siding was promoted as Slocan Park. South Slocan
South Slocan is an unincorporated community in rural British Columbia with a population of approximately 100 people, many of whom are followers of the Doukhobors religion. It is located on the northwest shore of the Kootenay River in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The village comprises 51 households. A former railway junction on BC Highway 6, it is approximately northeast of Castlegar, and southwest of Nelson. Its postal category is Rural Route One. Early settlement South Slocan was originally called Ward's Ferry, Ward’s Crossing, and Ward's Bay. Kaslo-Slocan
Kaslo-Slocan was the name of a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia centred on the town of Kaslo on Kootenay Lake as well as the mining towns of the "Silvery Slocan". The riding first appeared in the 1924 election as the result of a merger of the former ridings of Kaslo and Slocan, and lasted until the 1963 election. Kaslo And Slocan Railway
The Kaslo and Slocan Railway (K&S) is a historic railway that operated in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The K&S connected Kaslo and Sandon. Initially a narrow-gauge railway, the line was later rebuilt to standard gauge. Narrow gauge Proposal The 1891 discovery of silver in the Slocan Range created a mining boom. A railway to transport ore was crucial for commercial mining. In 1892, the province issued the charter to promoter John Hendry for a standard gauge line, amended to narrow gauge in 1894. Planned was a western terminal at Cody, with a spur to Sandon. The May 1893 stock market collapse and drop in the silver price depressed the economy, which delayed construction and prompted the narrow gauge decision. This choice halved construction costs. Steamboat connections on Kootenay Lake were southward from Kaslo to Five Mile Point (east of Nelson), which linked with the Nelson and Fort Sheppard Railway.
