Slains Pursuivant Of Arms
Slains Pursuivant of Arms is a private officer of arms appointed by the Chief of the Name and Arms of Hay – presently the Earl of Erroll, Lord High Constable of Scotland. It is believed that the Hay family had an officer of arms since the time that the office of Lord High Constable was forfeited by the Comyn family and passed to the Hays. The first mention of Slains Pursuivant is from around 1412 when the Earl of Erroll introduced Slains to a guild in Perth. After World War II, Sir Iain Moncreiffe of that Ilk revived the practice of appointing private officers. Slains Pursuivant is senior among these officers because his master ranks before all peers of Scotland. The present holder of the office is John Malden. Peter Drummond-Murray Of Mastrick
William Edward Peter Louis Drummond-Murray of Mastrick (24 November 1929 – 13 April 2014) was a Scottish herald, Private Officer of Arms, stockbroker and banker. He was also active in Catholic philanthropy. Biography Educated at Beaumont College, he was the son of Edward John Drummond-Murray of Mastrick (1907-1976) by (div. 1936) Eulalia Ildefonsa Wilhelmina Heaven (d. 1988), daughter of William Anthony Raymond Heaven, of Ashfield, Queen's County. On his father's side, he was descended from the Murrays of Mastrick in Aberdeenshire and the Earls of Perth. His mother, who was half Spanish, was named after her godmother, the Infanta Eulalia of Spain. In June 1954, he married Hon. Sir Rupert Iain Kay Moncreiffe of that Ilk, 11th Baronet (9 April 1919 – 27 February 1985), Chief of Clan Moncreiffe, was a British Officer of Arms and genealogist. Sir Crispin Agnew, 11th Baronet
Sir Crispin Hamlyn Agnew of Lochnaw, 11th Baronet, (born 13 May 1944) is a Scottish advocate, herald and former explorer. He is the chief of the ancient Agnew family, and the eleventh holder of the Agnew baronetcy, created in 1629. Agnew is the only son of Sir Fulque Agnew and his wife Swanzie Erskine, latterly Professor of Geography at the University of Malawi. He succeeded his father in 1975. He was educated at Uppingham School and RMA Sandhurst, before being commissioned into the Royal Highland Fusiliers in 1964. He served in Germany, Cyprus, Northern Ireland and the UK. As an active climber and mountaineer and member of the Alpine Club (UK) he was involved with the army's policy of developing adventurous training for soldiers of all ranks. Peregrine Moncreiffe Of That Ilk
The Hon. Peregrine David Euan Malcolm Hay, later Moncreiffe of that Ilk, Baron of Easter Moncreiffe and Chief of Clan Moncreiffe (born 16 February 1951), is the second son of Sir Iain Moncreiffe of that Ilk, 11th Baronet Moncreiffe and Diana Denyse Hay, 23rd Countess of Errol. He is also the younger brother of Sir Merlin Sereld Victor Gilbert Hay, 12th Baronet Moncreiffe, 24th Earl of Erroll and Chief of Clan Hay. Biography He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. While at Christ Church he rowed for Oxford at number 7 in the 1972 Boat Race; this was a bleak period for Oxford and his crew lost by nine and a half lengths. Michael Maclagan
Michael Maclagan, (14 April 1914 – 13 August 2003) was a British historian, antiquary and herald. He was Fellow and Tutor in Modern History at Trinity College, Oxford, for more than forty years, a long-serving officer of arms, and Lord Mayor of Oxford 1970–71. Career Maclagan was born in London and educated at Winchester College and Christ Church, Oxford. He graduated from Christ Church with a first class degree in 1935, and was awarded the Gladstone Memorial Exhibition. After two years as a lecturer at Christ Church, he was elected a Fellow of Trinity College in 1939 (the last Fellow to be so elected before the outbreak of World War II). At both Winchester and Oxford he was a member of the Officer Training Corps; and he served as President of the Oxford University Archaeological Society. A private officer of arms is one of the heralds and pursuivants appointed by great noble houses to handle all heraldic and genealogical questions. History Since the development of heraldry in the Middle Ages and the rise of officers of arms, noble families have appointed heralds and pursuivants to look after the correct marshalling of their coats of arms and research genealogical links. Many noblemen in Britain retained heralds from about 1170 onwards, as did important knights such as Sir John Chandos.
