Skull Valley (Utah)
Skull Valley is a long''Utah Atlas & Gazetteer,'' DeLorme, 6th ed., 2014, pp. 15, 16, 23 & 24 valley located in east Tooele County, Utah, United States at the southwest of the Great Salt Lake. The valley trends north–south, but turns slightly northeast to meet Stansbury Bay, (adjacent Stansbury Island). Skull Valley's south and southwest borders the southeast Great Salt Lake Desert at Dugway and at a ridgeline southeast from the Cedar Mountains. The Skull Valley Indian Reservation is located in the valley's south at the southwest foothills of the Stansbury Mountains; adjacent southeast, the valley narrows between the Stansbury Mountains and the Cedar Mountains at the west, a region of creeks from the Stansburys and valley springs, Willow Patch Springs and Scribner Spring. Great Salt Lake Desert
The Great Salt Lake Desert (colloquially referred to as the West Desert) is a large dry lake in northern Utah, United States, between the Great Salt Lake and the Nevada border. It is a subregion of the larger Great Basin Desert, and noted for white evaporite Lake Bonneville salt deposits including the Bonneville Salt Flats. Description Several small mountain ranges occupy the edges of the desert, such as the Cedar Mountains, Lakeside Mountains, Silver Island Mountains, Hogup Mountains, Grassy Mountains, and Newfoundland Mountains. On the western edge of the desert, just across the border in Nevada, stands Pilot Peak in the Pilot Range. The desert is cool during the winter and includes unusual plants adapted to the dry conditions. Most of the desert receives less than of annual precipitation. Dugway Proving Ground (DPG) is a U.S. Army facility established in 1942 to test biological and chemical weapons, located about southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, United States, and south of the Utah Test and Training Range. Iosepa ( or , with the ''I'' like an English ''Y'') is a ghost town in the Skull Valley, located approximately southwest of Salt Lake City in Tooele County, Utah, United States. Once home to over 200 Polynesian members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), Iosepa was inhabited during the period 1889–1917. Today, it is the site of an annual Memorial Day gathering that draws islanders and others from all over the Western United States. History Foundation Mormon missionaries were sent to Polynesia starting in the 1850s. Many of their converts wanted to emigrate or "gather" to Utah with the main body of the Church, but were restricted by law, particularly in Hawaii. Skull Valley Indian Reservation
The Skull Valley Indian Reservation (Gosiute dialect: Wepayuttax) is located in Tooele County, Utah, United States, approximately southwest of Salt Lake City. It is inhabited by the Skull Valley Band of Goshute Indians of Utah, a federally recognized tribe. As of 2017 the tribe had 134 registered members and 15-20 people living on the reservation. Landbase The reservation comprises of land in east central Tooele County, adjacent to the southwest side of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest in the Stansbury Mountains. Stansbury Island
Stansbury Island is the second largest island within the Great Salt Lake in the U.S. state of Utah. Located in Tooele County, it is considered an island even though a dirt causeway connects it to the mainland. Stansbury Island was named after Howard Stansbury, the leader of a government expedition that surveyed the lake in 1849. A biking trail is located on the island. Petroglyphs and two caves large enough to explore are also located on the island. Its peak is Castle Rock, at 6647 feet above sea level. Camping is permitted in most areas. Geography and geology Stansbury Island is longitudinally aligned and is approximately long, wide, and in area. The island is a desert mountain/mountain range, with a few fresh water seeps along the eastern side. The western side lacks water. Onaqui Mountains
The Onaqui Mountains are a mountain range in southeastern Tooele County, Utah United States. Description The range is part of a continuous range with the Stansbury Mountains and Sheeprock Mountains. The highest point is Stookey Benchmark, which reaches 9,020 feet. Rush Valley is on the east side of the range and Skull Valley is to the west. The Bureau of Land Management administers the Onaqui Mountains Herd Management Area, a home to 450 wild horses. Horses have been in the area since the late 1800s, mostly from local ranch stock. There was concern that genetic variability of the herd was critically low, so horses from other HMAs were added to the herd.
