Skomvær Lighthouse
Skomvær Lighthouse ( no, Skomvær fyr) is a coastal lighthouse in Røst Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The tower is located on the island of Skomvær, about southwest of the main island of Røstlandet. The lighthouse was first established in 1887 and it was automated in 1978. The area was listed as a protected site in 1999. The steel-hulled barque '' Skomvær'' takes her name from the lighthouse. Specifications The tall lighthouse has a red, cast iron, cylindrical tower that stands on top of a circular white stone base. The light is emitted at a height of above sea level. The light on top of the tower puts out two white flashes every 30 seconds. The 2,007,300-candela light can be seen for up to in all directions. The light is on from dusk to sunrise from 4 August until 2 May each year (it is not on during the summers due to the midnight sun in the region). Cast iron is a class of iron–carbon alloys with a carbon content more than 2%. Its usefulness derives from its relatively low melting temperature. Røst
Røst is a small island municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is part of the traditional district of Lofoten. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Røstlandet on the island of Røstlandet. The coast of Norway is 100,915 km long and there have been a total of 212 lighthouses along it, but no more than 154 have ever been operational at the same time. The first, Lindesnes Lighthouse, opened in 1655; the newest Lighthouse, Anda, was finished in 1932. The first Lighthouses were private operations, but in 1821 the government made the Channel and Harbor Inspector responsible for Lighthouses in Norway. The midnight sun is a natural phenomenon that occurs in the summer months in places north of the Arctic Circle or south of the Antarctic Circle, when the Sun remains visible at the local midnight. Skomvær (barque)
''Skomvær'' was the name of a steel-hulled barque built in 1890 for J. C. & G. Knudsen in Porsgrunn, Telemark, Norway. The ship, which was designed by naval architecture, naval architect Randulf Hansen and constructed at Laxevaags Maskin- og Jernskibsbyggeri in Bergen, was the first sailing ship constructed with steel in Norway and for a time the largest Norwegian sailing vessel ever built. However, the ship struggled to compete in the 20th century with the advent of the Steamboat, steamship, and in 1924 she was decommissioned and sold for scrap. ''Skomvær'' entered the public eye once again in 1960, when musician Erik Bye wrote the song "Skomværsvalsen" as a tribute to the ship and her crew.
