Skid Roper
Skid Roper (born Richard Banke, October 19, 1954, in National City, California, United States) is an American musician, most active in the 1980s and early 1990s. He has recorded with several groups including the surf band The Evasions, but is best known for his work with Mojo Nixon between 1985 and 1989. With Nixon, Roper served mainly as an instrumentalist. He commonly played instruments such as the washboard and the mandolin. Since parting ways with Nixon in 1989, Roper has released three solo albums. The first two albums had a much stronger country influence, and were considerably less raucous than his work with Nixon. Roper also formed a surf band called Skid Roper and the Shadowcasters. Roper's latest CD, ''Rock and Roll Part 3'', was released in 2010. Ten years in the making, Roper plays guitar, mandolin, organ, harmonica, percussion and whistling, sings each track and wrote all but one song. National City is a city located in the South Bay region of the San Diego metropolitan area, in southwestern San Diego County, California. Washboard (musical Instrument)
The washboard and frottoir (from Cajun French "frotter", to rub) are used as a percussion instrument, employing the ribbed metal surface of the cleaning device as a rhythm instrument. As traditionally used in jazz, zydeco, skiffle, jug band, and old-time music, the washboard remained in its wooden frame and is played primarily by tapping, but also scraping the washboard with thimbles. Often the washboard has additional traps, such as a wood block, a cowbell, and even small cymbals. Conversely, the frottoir (zydeco rubboard) dispenses with the frame and consists simply of the metal ribbing hung around the neck. It is played primarily with spoon handles or bottle openers in a combination of strumming, scratching, tapping and rolling. Kent Music Report
The Kent Music Report was a weekly record chart of Australian music singles and albums which was compiled by music enthusiast David Kent (historian), David Kent from May 1974 through to January 1999. The chart was re-branded the Australian Music Report (AMR) in July 1987. From June 1988, the Australian Recording Industry Association, which had been using the top 50 portion of the report under licence since mid-1983, chose to produce their own listing as the ARIA Charts. Before the Kent Report, ''Go-Set'' magazine published weekly Top-40 Singles from 1966, and Album charts from 1970 until the magazine's demise in August 1974. David Kent later published Australian charts from 1940 to 1973 in a retrospective fashion, using state by state chart data obtained from various Australian radio stations. Bo-Day-Shus!!!
''Bo-Day-Shus!!!'' is the third album by Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper, released in 1987. It contains the song "Elvis is Everywhere," which became an MTV hit. The album peaked at #189 on the ''Billboard'' 200. Production Skid Roper wrote and sang two songs on the album, "The Polka Polka" and "Lincoln Logs." Critical reception Kiernan McCarthy of AllMusic praised the album's humor, writing that "not every joke Mojo Nixon lets fly on ''Bo-Day-Shus!!!'' is a knee-slapper, but one cannot deny his persistence. If you don't like the first quip, he might catch you on the second one, or the tenth." He specifically referred to "Elvis is Everywhere" and "I Ain't Gonna Piss In No Jar" as the best examples of this. Robert Christgau also appreciated "Elvis is Everywhere," comparing it to the music of Phil Ochs, but was critical of several of the other tracks, especially Roper's contribution "Lincoln Logs." Frenzy (Mojo Nixon Album)
''Frenzy'' is the second album by Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper, released in 1986. The album was re-released on CD in 1987, with the EP '' Get Out Of My Way!'' added to the end. The CD uses the ''Get Out of My Way!'' mix of "Stuffin' Martha's Muffin," which filters the telephone conversation part of Nixon's opening monologue to sound like he is talking on the phone, instead of the original ''Frenzy'' LP mix. "Transylvanian Xmas" is a version of "Joy to the World," performed by Roper on harmonica with the melody tweaked to sound spooky; Nixon plays bongos. "Jesus at McDonalds" is a newer recording of the song from their first LP, '' Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper''. ''Get Out of My Way!'' is the first extended play by Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper. It was released in 1986 as a vinyl mini-album and cassette on Restless Records. The songs were added to the CD release of the album ''Frenzy'' in 1987. "Stuffin' Martha's Muffin" is the same recording as on ''Frenzy'', but a different mix, which most notably filters Nixon's voice during part of the opening monologue to sound like he is on a telephone line; this version replaces the original on the ''Frenzy'' CD. "Transylvanian Xmas" is "Joy to the World" performed by Roper on harmonica in a scale reminiscent of horror movie scores, backed by Nixon on bongos.
