Six Days Of Berlin
The Six Days of Berlin is a six-day track cycling race held annually in Berlin, Germany. The event was first held in 1909. In its first edition, 15 teams of two cyclists each competed in the exhibition hall at Berlin Zoo for glory and, not least, 5000 Goldmarks. Klaus Bugdahl holds the record of victories with nine. The time when the 6 day race is held is sometimes just in the middle of the football season, the winter is severe, and football league in Germany had rather long winter break. In the past Bundesliga was suspended from mid December to mid February. Therefore, 6-day races were considered major entertainment events at that time ( handball was to some extent). In particular, the Berlin 6-day race, which has reached the 100th race at the 2011 competition, still has a large audience, and in the heyday it was held twice a season. Floyd McFarland
Floyd Alfred MacFarland (July 9, 1878 – April 17, 1915) was an American track cyclist and pioneer of six-day racing. Career MacFarland competed mainly in sprint events early in his career, having won the national championships in this discipline. One of his biggest rivals was Major Taylor, whose grandparents had been slaves. MacFarland, who was the descendant of a Virginia plantation owner, was known to be racist. He even founded his own national racing association, the Cycle Racing Association, to exclude Taylor from competitions. In the following years, MacFarland concentrated on six-day races and Madison races. After retiring from competition, he became one of the leading race promoters and managers in the nation up until his death in 1915. Robert Howe Walthour Sr. (1 January 1878 – 1 September 1949) was one of the best American professional cyclists of his era. Career summary Bobby Walthour started his career as a sprinter and developed into a formidable six-day rider, but achieved his greatest fame as a fearless motor-pacer. Walthour turned professional in 1896. He won America’s greatest race, the six-day race inside Madison Square Garden, with his partner, Canadian Archie McEachern, in 1901. Walthour again won at the Garden in 1903 with fellow American southerner Bennie Munroe. In 1902 and 1903 Walthour won American motor-paced championships. Jacqueline Clark (born 14 March 1963) is a New Zealand former cricketer who played as a left-handed opening batter. Walter Oscar Rütt (12 September 1883 – 23 June 1964) was a German track cyclist. A professional from 1900 to 1926, Rütt recorded 933 victories in 25 years, including nine victories in six-day races. He most notably won the sprint event at the 1913 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. He also won three bronze medals in the same event prior to his victory. He also won the European sprint championships in 1911 and the German national sprint championships in 1910, 1919, 1920 and 1923. Maurice Brocco
Maurice Brocco (28 January 1883, in Fismes – 26 June 1965, in Mûrs-Erigné) was a French professional road bicycle racer between 1906 and 1927. He was born into a family of Swiss-Italian immigrants. In 1911 he won a stage in the Tour de France. He participated six times in the Tour de France, but finished the race only once. In his later career he was successful in six-day races. In the 1911 Tour de France, Brocco was disqualified because he helped François Faber, which was not allowed. Brocco appealed, he was allowed to start the next stage. Brocco won that stage, and his disqualification was completed after the stage. Racing career Brocco first became prominent as a rider in 1907 when he won the Paris-Dieppe race as an amateur. George Leon Passerieu (London, 18 November 1885–Épinay-sur-Orge, 5 May 1928) was a British-born French professional road bicycle racer, who won seven stages in the Tour de France, and reached the podium twice. He also was the winner of Paris–Roubaix and Paris–Tours. Biography According to the 1891 UK census (available on subscription) a George Passerieu was born in Islington, London to French-born Auguste Passerieu and his wife Ellen (nee Acraman) from the London district of Soho. Passerieu first rode the Tour in 1906, after he had just become a professional cyclist. He was strong in the mountains, finishing second to René Pottier in the third stage. Pottier was dominant in that Tour, but Passerieu was the best of the rest. Passerieu won the first stage, beating Pottier in Marseille after they had climbed the mountains together.
