Sivaganga Railway Station
Sivaganga railway station serves the city of Sivaganga, India. The station belongs to the Madurai railway division and is a major transit point in Sivagangai district. It is also known by its official code: SVGA. It is under the station category B. It is one of the district headquarters railway station in India. History History of this station goes back to British Rule. This station served as a Terminal Railway Station of Manamadurai - Sivagangai Branch Line. Later new railway line was built between Trichinopoly (now Tiruchirappalli) to Pudukkottai for goods transport. In order to establish a direct rail link in-between Sivagangai to Tiruchirappalli railway line was established via Karaikudi. Later Aranthangi Tiruvarur line was extended until Karaikudi from Aranthangi in order ease movement of goods to Nagapattinam Port. So it made Karaikudi as a Junction. Karaikkudi Junction is one of the major passenger rail head and major junction located in Sivaganga district and serving the towns of karaikudi, Devakottai and Thirupathur in Tamil Nadu. History The station was constructed as a part of Pudukkottai–Sivaganga railway line during the 1930s. Initially during its older days this station acted as an ordinary railway station when the Tiruturaipundi Aranthangi line was extend till karaikudi, it became a junction railway station. Silambu Express
The Silambu Express (20681/20682) is a train that runs between and via . Initially it ran up to Manamadurai, later it was extended up to Sengottai. It was the only train in Indian Railways where LHB rakes were replaced by ICF coaches again. According to IR if a train gets new LHB coaches it won't be converted to ICF. But this train was again replaced with ICF coaches after getting new LHB rakes. History The name of the train commemorates the Kannagi or (Kannaki), a legendary Tamil woman who is the main character of the South Indian epic Silapathikaram (100–300 CE) who used the Silambu as the only item for saving her husband. Kalayar Kovil
Kalaiyar Kovil is a historic temple in Sivaganga District, Tamil Nadu, India. Location The temple is in Sivaganga District, east of Sivagangai. Name of temple Kalaiyar Kovil derived its name from the Kaleeswarar temple of the place. Kalaiyar is a corruption of the word Kaleeswaran. During the Sangam period, this place was known as Kaanapair as can be seen from the 21st verse in the purananooru sung by Iyur moolakizhar, a poet of the Sangam period. In the ninth century A.D. Saint Sundara moorthy nayanar described the presiding deity in his devotional songs as Kaalai. Since then the deity was known as Kalaiyar, with the Tamil sufix yar added to it denoting respect. Thirukoshtiyur is a village located near Tirupathur (on Tirupathur-Sivaganga road) on the way to Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu. It is 9 km from Thirupathur.
