Sisters Of St. John The Baptist
The Sisters of St. John the Baptist (Baptistines) are a Roman Catholic female religious institute, founded in Angri, Italy in 1878, by Alfonso Maria Fusco. History Shortly before he was ordained in 1863, Alfonso Maria Fusco dreamt that he was called to found an orphanage and a new religious community of women to staff it. He was assigned to Angri, where the parish church was dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. There, he met Maddalena Caputo, who was interested in entering religious life. In September 1878, Caputo and three others became the first Sisters of St. John the Baptist of the Nazarene. They converted a dilapidated house into the Little House of Providence to shelter orphans, who were given an education, and the older ones taught a trade. Caputo, now known as Sister Crocifissa, became the first superior of the institute. The congregation received final approval from the Holy See in 1927. Angri
Angri is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Salerno, Campania, southern Italy. It is around northwest of the town of Salerno. History The Byzantine general Narses defeated Teias, the last king of the Goths, nearby in AD 553. Alfonso Maria Fusco
Alfonso Maria Fusco (23 March 1839 – 6 February 1910) was a Roman Catholic priest and the founder of the Sisters of Saint John the Baptist – also known as the Baptistine Sisters. Their mission was to evangelize and educate as well as to promote the faith amongst adolescents with a particular emphasis on those who were poor or abandoned. He received beatification from Pope John Paul II in 2001 and Pope Francis approved his canonization on 26 April 2016 – a date was determined on 20 June 2016 for sainthood and it was celebrated on 16 October 2016. Life Alfonso Maria Fusco was born as the first of five children to Aniello Fusco (a farmer) and Giuseppina Schianova at Angri in Salerno on 23 March 1839; his parents married on 31 January 1834.
