Sirhowy Valley Walk
Sirhowy () is a village in the Sirhowy Valley () and the county of Blaenau Gwent. It is located north east of Tredegar, north west of Ebbw Vale, and north west of Newport. The A4048 runs near the village. Tourism The area is also known as a popular rock climbing site due to the geology of the area offering "one of the best chunks of quarried sandstone in the area". UK Climbing describe this as providing a "brilliant line-up of fingery wall climbs" and "plenty of excellent (slightly) easier climbing on some of the best rock around." History The Gwent Heritage voluntary group have extensively documented the history of the area as far back as its mining establishment. Tredegar
Tredegar (pronounced , ) is a town and community situated on the banks of the Sirhowy River in the county borough of Blaenau Gwent, in the southeast of Wales. Within the historic boundaries of Monmouthshire, it became an early centre of the Industrial Revolution in Wales. The relevant wards (Tredegar Central and West, Sirhowy and Georgetown) collectively listed the town's population as 15,103 in the UK 2011 census. Sirhowy Railway Station
Sirhowy railway station was a station on the Sirhowy Railway. It served Sirhowy near the town of Tredegar. History The station was opened on 19 June 1865 by the Sirhowy Railway after the conversion of the Sirhowy Tramroad The Sirhowy Tramroad was a plateway built to convey the products of ironworks at Tredegar to Newport, South Wales. It opened in 1805 between Tredegar and Nine Mile Point, a location west of Risca, from where the Monmouthshire Canal Company oper ... to a standard gauge railway. It was closed to passenger traffic on 13 June 1960. The line from Sirhowy to Tredegar continued in operation for goods traffic until closure on 4 November 1963. Present day The route has been reused by the modern A4048 road; there are no remains of the station at the site.
