Senedd
The Senedd ( ; ), officially known as the Welsh Parliament in English and () in Welsh, is the devolved, unicameral legislature of Wales. A democratically elected body, Its role is to scrutinise the Welsh Government and legislate on devolved matters that are not reserved to the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It is a bilingual institution, with both Welsh and English being the official languages of its business. From its creation in May 1999 until May 2020, the Senedd was officially known as the National Assembly for Wales () and was often simply called the Welsh Assembly. The Senedd comprises 60 members who are known as members of the Senedd (), abbreviated as "MS" (). 2021 Senedd Election
The 2021 Senedd election took place on Thursday 6 May 2021 to elect 60 members to the Senedd (Welsh Parliament; ). It was the sixth Devolution in the United Kingdom, devolved general election since the Senedd (formerly the National Assembly for Wales) was established in 1999. The election was held alongside the 2021 Scottish Parliament election, Scottish Parliament election, 2021 United Kingdom local elections, English local elections, 2021 London Assembly election, London Assembly and 2021 London mayoral election, mayoral election and the 2021 Hartlepool by-election, Hartlepool by-election. It was the first election in which 16- and 17-year-olds and legally resident foreign nationals were allowed to vote in Wales, the largest extension of the franchise in Wales since 1969. Next Senedd Election
The next Senedd election is due to be held by 7 May 2026 to elect 96 members to the Senedd (Welsh Parliament; ). It will be the seventh devolved general election since the Senedd (formerly the National Assembly for Wales) was established in 1999. If held in 2026 it will also be the first election following current reforms to the voting system, which would increase the size of the Senedd from 60 members to 96, adopting a party-list voting system, reducing the number of constituencies to sixteen, and shortening its term from five years to four. It will also be the second election since the Senedd changed its name in May 2020. Senedd Building
The Senedd building (), in Cardiff, houses the debating chamber and three committee rooms of the Senedd (Welsh Parliament; ; formerly the National Assembly for Wales). The Senedd building was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 1 March 2006, Saint David's Day, and the total cost was £69.6 million, which included £49.7 million in construction costs. The Senedd building is part of the Senedd estate that includes Tŷ Hywel and the Pierhead Building. After two selection processes, it was decided that the debating chamber would be on a new site, called Site 1E, at Capital Waterside in Cardiff Bay. The Pritzker Prize-winning architect Richard Rogers, Lord Rogers of Riverside won an international architectural design competition, managed by RIBA Competitions, to design the building. Leader Of The Opposition In Wales
In the Senedd, the Leader of the Opposition () is the leader of the Official Opposition (), the largest political party that is not in the Welsh Government. The Leader of the Opposition leads and appoints members of the Shadow Cabinet and as such is sometimes styled as the Shadow First Minister of Wales (Shadow First Secretary before 2000). Since 5 December 2024 the Leader of the Opposition in the Senedd is Darren Millar (Conservative). To date the office has been held by seven individuals, three from Plaid Cymru and four from the Welsh Conservatives. Only one, Ieuan Wyn Jones, has gone on to serve in the Welsh Government. Darren David Millar (born 1976) is a Welsh politician who has served as the leader of the Welsh Conservatives since December 2024, and Member of the Senedd (MS) for Clwyd West since 2007. Background Millar was born and grew up in Towyn. Political career Millar joined Clwyd North Conservative Association at age 15, and shortly after became chairman. Local government In 1999, Millar ran for the Towyn ward on Conwy County Borough Council, and for Towyn and Kinmel Bay town council. He was not elected to the county council, but was elected to the town council. From 2000 to 2001, Millar was mayor of the township of Towyn and Kinmel Bay. The Eluned Morgan government is the government of Wales formed by Eluned Morgan from August 2024, following her appointment as First Minister of Wales on 6 August.
