Sir William Lewis, 1st Baronet
Sir William Lewis, 1st Baronet (26 March 1598 – November 1677) of Llangorse, Brecon and Bordean House, East Meon, Hampshire, supported the Parliamentary cause during the English Civil War. He sat in the House of Commons of England, House of Commons variously between 1640 and 1677. Biography Lewis was the son of Lodowick Lewis of Trewalter, and his wife, a daughter of William Watkins of Llangorse. He was created Lewis Baronets, Baronet of Llangorse on 14 September 1628 and was High Sheriff of Breconshire for 1619 and 1636. In April 1640, Lewis was elected Member of Parliament for Petersfield (UK Parliament constituency), Petersfield in the Short Parliament. He was re-elected MP for Petersfield in November 1640 for the Long Parliament, where he sat until he was excluded under Pride's Purge. He was Parliamentary Governor of Portsmouth for 1642–43. English Civil War
The English Civil War (1642–1651) was a series of civil wars and political machinations between Parliamentarians (" Roundheads") and Royalists led by Charles I ("Cavaliers"), mainly over the manner of England's governance and issues of religious freedom. It was part of the wider Wars of the Three Kingdoms. The first (1642–1646) and second (1648–1649) wars pitted the supporters of King Charles I against the supporters of the Long Parliament, while the third (1649–1651) saw fighting between supporters of King Charles II and supporters of the Rump Parliament. The wars also involved the Scottish Covenanters and Irish Confederates. The war ended with Parliamentarian victory at the Battle of Worcester on 3 September 1651. John Button (1624–1679)
John Button (1624 – December 1679) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1659 and 1679. Button was the only son of John Button of Buckland in Hampshire and his first wife Eleanor South, daughter of Thomas South of South Baddesley. He entered Inner Temple in 1641. He was made freeman of Lymington in 1646 and was a commissioner for militia in 1648. In 1659, he was elected Member of Parliament for Lymington in the Third Protectorate Parliament. He was re-elected MP for Lymington in 1660 for the Convention Parliament. In 1665 he succeeded his father to the estate of Buckland. He was a commissioner for assessment for Hampshire from 1677 and was a captain of the militia by 1679. In 1679 he was returned as MP for Lymington in the two elections but died before the second parliament met. Baronets In The Baronetage Of England
A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century, however in its current usage was created by James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown. A baronetcy is the only British hereditary honour that is not a peerage, with the exception of the Anglo-Irish Black Knights, White Knights, and Green Knights (of whom only the Green Knights are extant). High Sheriffs Of Brecknockshire
This is a list of High Sheriffs of Brecknockshire or Breconshire. The office of High Sheriff of Brecknockshire was established in 1535 since when a High Sheriff was appointed annually by the Queen until 1974 when the office was merged into that of High Sheriff of Powys as part of the creation of Powys from the amalgamation of Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire and Brecknockshire. The Office of High Sheriff remained first in precedence in the County until the reign of Edward VII when an Order in Council in 1908 gave the Lord Lieutenant of Brecknockshire the prime Office under the Crown as the Sovereign's personal representative.
